My 8 year old step-son was cleaning up the back lawn so we could mow it shortly, however, he somehow managed to slice his ankle and foot right open, blood was pouring out every where, I think he managed to hit a vain for it to bleed like that.

My fiancee has taken him up to our local medical clinic instead of the hospital because the hospital is much further away, and our sons in great pain with it, but the bastards wouldn't help him because they don't bulk bill, and we don't have the funds for the consult fee of $70 odd dollars, plus fee's for pain medication and stiching. They would not even consider any other option, say a payment plan or something, for crying out loud its a child were talking about here, I find it rather poor practice to do that, especially when a child is involved.

Anyway, the only other option was to take him to the hospital, I just got a call from the fiancee, they are in the Emergency Department waiting room at the moment, their is 2 holes in his foot, the bleeding seems to have stopped, but if he moves it starts again, so I dare say that he has hit a vain or worse, but I am holding my breath for the latter.

When kids are involved I find it appalling that you get ill treated and have to wait when it is something so severe.

I am still shaking, all that blood pouring out really scared the crappers out of me, I feel completely helpless and useless when I cannot do something for my kids in these types of situation. My youngest son Jonas was screaming out my name and asking his brother if he was ok, as he was with his brother when it happened! That really shocked me, shows the love between 2 brothers, if anything ever happened to either of them, atleast I can be rest assured that they react like that. Jonas was really scared and caring like I have never seen before, I was on my PC at the time, burning some DVD's and all I heard was "Dad, Dad, Hurry Up, Anthony's Hurt"!

Will let you know how it goes, hopefully it just appears to be more serious than it actully is.

    Regards,

    David

It has been over 2 hours since arriving at the hospital A & E Department, however they are still in the waiting room awaiting to be called in, that is way to long, especially since they do not know how severe the cut is yet!

Something needs to be done about our hospital up here, it is the only hospital that I know off, that if you get crook they patch you up, but you seem to have to always go back their for treatment in the not to distant future!

    Unbelievable!

Wow, that's the second horror story about medical issues from Australia this week. You guys produce some great actors, that's for sure. But what gives with the system?
Hope everything goes well with your kid as I'm certain it will. Unbelievable that they wouldn't take care of an emergency at a clinic!
I too have children, grown now though. I've been where you are at, although we were never turned away.

After a long wait in the emergency department they got called in after 3 hours, they cleaned it up, the one on the lower part of the foot wasn't bad, but the one on the ankle joint required 2 stiches.

He apparently screamed the hospital right through when it came to getting a needle to numb the area, he is like me, has a massive phobia of needles, our body wasn't made to be treated like a pin cusion, you`d think after the year I have had I myself would be used to needles, but I aint, I am more fearful now than ever before.

Thanks for the best wishes, he seems to be fine, although we are trying to get him to stay of that foot, becuase it keeps bleeding from the stiches as he streches the skin.

    Cheers,

    David

Glad he is on the mend, I say let him go out and play and get some dirt in it like a normal kid (which he probably will anyway.) That's how I always did when I was young and I turned out ok. no wait... bad idea.

I can relate with the waiting in the waiting room, hence the name. I've sat there up to 5 hours before. But... just recently I twisted my ankle pretty bad and I went to the ER and did the sign in, give insurance info, etc. They just started a program at my local hospital called "Fast Track" It was only 2-3 minutes and I had seen the nurse to take the vitals and in seconds doctor was in to look at me. Then I was taken directly X-ray. I waited about 5 minutes for the doctor to return with a ace bandage, ice packs and two different prescriptions. I was there max a total of 10 minutes and I was driving back down the road. THAT'S how it should be done.

That doesn't sound good. Hopefully it's closed now. Seems they should have had him elevate for a bit to give it a chance to seal.
Children can give you a scare like nothing else. Take Care
