i was having some serious issues with my hard drive. i tried all of the suggestions and nothing helped. i replaced the hard drive thinking there was a bad sector. i replaced windows 2000 with xp and downloaded the data base for the programs i wanted to keep. the first problem was i could not get sound from any source. i replaced the sound board and still no luck. i replaced the cdrom and nothing. after having the new drive in for about a week i booted and received the message that no locking handle could be found. what is a locking handle and where did mine go? how do i get it back? i guess i should tell you that i left the old drive in in case i needed any of the data that i hadn't downloaded yet. the "experts" around here are telling me my machine is dead and i need a new one. any help would be greatly appreciated. oh, yea. i'm not a beginner but i'm far from being proficent at understanding the inner workings of a computer. please reduce answers and suggestions down to the simplest terms possible. maybe on the fourth grade level. thanks

Tim, thanks for the link and the solution. but i can not access the net. it doesn't matter whick icon i click i get the no locking handle found. my machine boots up just like normal as far as i can tell. even if i boot in safe mode i get the same results. like is explained i am far from an expert on computers, so you will have to ask more specific questions in order to get the answer you are looking for. sorry i'm not much help. if i could just gain access to the hard drive i could do a restore, right?

    It's:
    sfc /scannow

It won't boot into any mode? normal or safe? Or it does boot but no icons work?

Do you have another computer that you could slave the drive into?

Do you have files and programs you need to save, or could you do a clean install?

Tim, it boots but only windows icons show up normally on the desk top. the other icoms look like pages from a book. what they look like before the icon becomes visible. sorry that is the best i can do. i cannot access any of the programs by clicking on the icon. that is when i get the locking handle missing error message. this happens in regular mode and safe mode. from the desk top or the all programs selection window. i want to save most of the files. i have spent a long time gathering some of the data. i never heard of a computer doing this before. first time i have ever had this problem. can't figure out why i could not get sound even after installing a new sound board. do you think i need a new motherboard and processor? most everything else is new. hard drive, cd writer and sound board.

tried to run sfc.exe. error message said 'WINDOWS CANNOT FIND SFC/SCANNOW. MAKE SURE YOU TYPED THE NAME CORRECTLY, AND THEN TRY AGAIN. if i put a space between c and / i get WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE: SFC.EXE TO OPEN THIS FILE, WINDOWS NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT PROGRAM CREATED IT. WINDOWS CANGO ONLINE TO LOOK IT UP AUTOMATICALLY, OR YOU CAN MANUALLY SELECT FROM A LIST OF PROGRAMS ON YOUR COMPUTER.
i appreciate you efforts and hanging with me on this problem. do you have anything else to suggest.

hi, guys. downloaded new version of unlocker. instructions told me to right click program icon and click on unlocker. when i did i received the same message - no locking handle found. one of my friends suggested i load xp again and start over. i do not have the os disk. this computer is custome job and came preloaded. i was not given any disks. i know i have to solve one challenge at a time but do you think this has anything to do with the fact that i can not get anything but system sounds? caused by same problem? thanks again for the help,
    dan

i want to correct a previous statement. i downloaded unlocker 1.8.5 to my desktop. when i went to install it i reeived the message "no locking handle found". i was able to run trend micro housecall and found no viruses. a few malwares and a couple of tracking cookies was all. i am aboe to browse the internet but still can not use any other programs. would you mind giving me some more suggestions?

The correct way for the system file checker is:
sfc /scannow with a space between the c and the /

But you need the install disk to run it.

Have you tried uninstalling the unlocker program and then doing a search for any remnants ...then run CCleaner (both the cleaner and the issues parts - do the backup when prompted) ...

As far as the icons....if they are still not right after doing the above ...make sure that they are pointed to the right target ....
