sound card/microphone issues - help pls

Just recently I've been having a problem that when I use ventrilo, or any other program to talk to people thru my microphone, I can't have any other computer noises going like games, music, etc. if i have any of those things playing, and i activate the voice to talk to someone, all they can hear is my game noise, mp3 noise, etc, and a very muffled me. this is on my headset, so the sound isn't coming thru the speakers & going back into the mic. it's real time that they can hear it. i tried installing the latest sound card drivers last night, but that didn't fix it. any ideas? thanks a ton. this is really annoying.

amd 3000+ 64 bit
win xp pro
512 ram
nvidia soundcard
geforce 5600 video card

the talking program that i have been using forever is called ventrilo. i never had this problem until recently.
