    Hi,

A pavillion zv5220us laptop had to be reformatted and all software re-installed because it was so badly infected.

The drivers were installed from the recovery CDs, but there is still no sound device installed. I checked the website for driver downloads and there appears to be no audio drivers for this laptop.

Does anyone know where I can find an appropriate sound driver?

What version of Windows? XP? Vista?

After some extended research I found that other laptops in the zv52xx series use the ADI sound driver. You can download it from HP using this direct link. If this driver doesn't work, please upload an Everest hardware report using the steps in this thread and we'll go from there.

    Thanks for the driver link.

I attempted to install the driver, but the installation failed. It reported that the driver could not be found, restart the computer and run the install again. Restarting and running the install produces the same message.

Device manager shows that base system device and multimedia audio controller isn't installed (? appears).

I will see if I can resolve those issues, but if you have more suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them. I will also get an Everest report.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I was able to get an audio driver installed from here.

However, while sounds seem to work, CDs and DVDs are not heard. I will continue to follow through with this, again, if you have a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

Try installing a codec pack. Two perennial favorites here at Major Geeks are the KLite Mega Codec Pack and the Vista Codec Pack. The Vista pack is designed for WindowsXP and Vista so don't let the name mislead you, and the KLite pack includes several helpful tools like the Codec Tweak Tool, GSpot Codec Info Tool, and Media Player Classic (my personal favorite media player). You can also check the audio settings in the control panel; it could be that the CD playback volume has been turned down or muted. Go to Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices, it should open to the Volume tab, click the advanced button and you should see something very similar to the screen shot I attached below.

I'll try installing the codecs. The first thing that I checked when I found this problem was the settings. Nothing is muted or low. The sound from windows startup or shutdown is clearly audible. Only the CD/DVD sound is inaudible.

    Thanks.

In the screen shot I attached above, it shows that the CD audio has it's own setting that can be turned down and/or muted. Also, some PCs require a separate audio cable from the CD/DVD drive to be connected to the motherboard (or sound card). They are generally grey, about 18" long with a 4pin connector on each end, but only three wires, and one pin in the end connectors is left empty. They look like this:

Maybe you need one of these connectors.... You can get 'em for under $2 usually at most PC stores, but modern CD/DVD drives don't require these cables anymore (the audio goes through the data cable) so you might need to poke around a bit to find one locally. You can always order it online if needed. Sometimes the motherboard end of the cable will require a smaller white connector so check your motherboard before getting the cable (if you determine that the missing cable is the problem).

CD volume is fine, as far as the settings display goes. This is a laptop, so the connections are probably not the same.

    I'll keep checking. Thanks.

    OK, update.

I installed InterDVD Player, and the DVDs are playing with sound now. However, the CDs are still not playing with sound. I don't understand why Windows Media Player won't play with sound. No sound through speakers or headphones.

So to summarize, windows sounds play through the speakers, dvds play with sound through speakers with InterDVD Player, but CDs do not have any sound.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

:-o Duh. Sometimes I'm just not real bright. rolleyes

    LOL

Did you try the codecs or a different media player? VLC Media Player is popular, and an excellent media player, and it can play just about everything without needing codecs (it has 'em built-in).
