Sound driver issues after virus run in...

Alright, so after a run in with a particularly nasty virus (which managed to dig in and disable TaskMan in Safe Mode.. yeah, THAT nasty..), I'm having issues undoing the damage it managed to do. Here's a basic run down of events:

1. Virus appears out of NOWHERE and Avira / Windows goes berserk - it had to be a delayed payload, because my network connection wasn't even active at the time. No idea why Avira wouldn't have picked it up when wherever/whatever caused it got to my system, but my luck being my luck, it didn't and this thing got pretty rampant prior to removal.

2. Liberal use of ComboFix, Avira, a little manual cleanup, and generally crushing of the wicked has eliminated the virus. All Avira / HJT / CF are coming up clean. Nothing suspicious running and the system seems to be back to normal aside from my next point...

3. Still a little residual damage that's been done that I haven't managed to undo as of yet, the primary being a total lack of sound on the system.

Status of the system (soundwise, anyway):

- Running Windows XP, SP2. Avira AV.

- My Realtek AC'97 shows up in the device manager. Shows as working normally.

- Driver uninstall / reinstall newest versions haven't done any good - the closest to progress was ONCE after installing, the Windows shutdown sound played as the machine restarted. No sound upon reboot.

- soundman.exe is running.

- Windows Audio service is running. Tried manually stopping / restarting it.

- Searched through the few registry entries I could find that were relevant to the audio.. nothing immediately jumped out at me.

- SFC.exe didn't want to cooperate because my DVDROM is failing lately (*THAT STARTED PRIOR TO THE VIRUS - It's older than dirt, just haven't gotten around to replacing it.) ... never had much luck with SFC anyway.. =P

- (Yes, the speakers are plugged in and everything )

I've run completely out of ideas. Anything anyone?
