My onboard sound has ceased to work.
The sound still works after reinstallation of the drivers, which I am doing at each start-up!!
Please confirm that this is a mobo failure, before i purchase and fit a new soundcard?

Did you check for any trojan viruses on you machine?
you could also do a clean install of your os and see if that helps.

Could I suppose be a trojan or virus  looks as though something is going wrong during/after the driver install usually windows will ask you to restart your computer does it not ask you to do this?,instead does your sound start working before a restart, could you also check the next time your sound doesnt work if there is a yellow exclaimation mark next to the sound card in device manager if not, I doubt its a driver issue,I think it may be more a default driver setting that is muted or adjusted by windows or some other sound program after you have restarted

Edit dont go buying any parts just yet :)

Thanx 4 ur help Rikki, agreed - I don't want to go buying parts just yet.
After driver installation it asks me to restart, and the sound works at this stage. There is no yellow exclamation in device manager upon restart.
I use latest version of Trendmicro Pc-cillin software, and is updated daily, so I assume there are no trojans/viruses. I am not entirely convinced that this software detects trojans, would you advise online trojan scans?
Would there be a setting in the BIOS turning sound off?
What other program could it be?

    Scan

That is a online trogan scan.

I know this sounds really silly but ive done it before have you checked the sound isnt muted in the sounds and audio device settings?

Right then this is the scenario,- install sound driver- '1'-restart comp-'2'-comp restarted sound working-restart comp again sound now not working

we can rule out bios as the only option is to disable or enable onboard sound it will have to be enabled for it work even once

Tough one is this what is happening I'm still not quite sure when the sound is working before or after you have have restarted after driver install point 1 or point 2

forgive my crappy little number thing  :)

Yes ther is a setting in your bios for on board audio it should be called ac3 97 or onboard audio make sure it's enabled.

    Thanks everyone for help/comments.
I have fully scanned pc with all software in my sig. and also to link provided below, a few malware problems and one trojan were detected and removed, but sound is not restored.

Rikki, sound returns immediately after re-installation of driver, but does not function after initial or other start-ups.

Have checked BIOS and cannot find the 'onboard sound' function.

I'm glad you put this comment in the forum about the sounds and audio device settings,
I just got on the forum to ask why I lost my sound and sure enough the mute was checked in the sounds and audio device settings. :)
What I don't understand is how did the mute box get checked?I never checked it,no one else uses my laptop.I run good anti virus and anti spyware programs and I'm doing online scans and everything is coming back clean.

Hey Rikky......the latest realtek ac 97 onboard sound driver (for xp) did the trick, as it worked after initial restart after installation.
Excellent, I am mighty grateful to your assistance.....many thanx to you and all others who contributed.
    Why should this happen anyway?
Why, when tried to udate driver for the device does it not locate it?

While I'm here, why doesn't the text formatting work in these replies, and also in signatures, even though they provide us the facility?

Last time I checked the text formatting does work in posts but not in sigs as people abuse it and put huge multi coloured writing in thier sigs that takes up half a page, some of the other features of the messageboard software have been disabled even though you can see them for this reason ;)

As for the driver prob it could be quite a few things the most obvious the driver you were trying to install was too old to be compatible with the hardware and software in your system or some error was occuring that stopped the driver being fully installed eg. the file was corrupt, investigating why it happened usually IMHO ends up with you reading a FAQ detailing the problem and the resolution is to upgrade to the latest driver a few hours of your life down the drain

    :)
