Does anybody know...of software that that you can frequency filter the sound coming out of your PC ?

What I mean is you're playing music on your PC,though PCs own speaker, or headphones or external speakers, is there software that 'graphically equalises' (you control the filters) the sounds digitally in quasi-real time before they are sent to the DAC and output port (speaker, sound socket) ?

Does anyone understand what I'm getting at ?

    Preferably freeware !

I came across the solution to this problem for my HP Pavilion system (if anyone's interested.)
Hidden in my system tray, there is an icon for 'Control IDT Audio Settings'. This must be specific to my model (and possibly similar models) of PC. In this control panel on the left hand side, select 'Equalization', and there will appear a frequency weighting graphic with the frequencies and weightings on log scales. It's easy to adjust the slide controllers.

which just leaves how to do this on my XP sytem with Realtek audio.

Sounds like you are looking for a system sound equalizer program that does the job for all sounds without the need for each app to have its own equalizer. I'm with you Dumb_Question. I have looked high and low and actually even have an icon on Rocket Dock for one. However, I can't point it to anything currently, because all the ones I have found are very expensive...

    The Equalizer is waiting:

Thanks for your comments; please give exampes of those that you found, I'd be interested in just having a quick look (if the forum permits such information).
The equalizer I described which comes with my HP Pavilion dm4 Win 7 (IDT Audio) apparently is the kind of thing I was looking for, so I'm not looking so hard now. It seems to control the sound output independently of the application that is generating the sound (as it's part of the sound system). But I am sure you understood this. It's not meant for professional applications as it's pretty simple. I've attached a screen shot so that you can see (in case you don't have IDT Audio)
