There should be an icon in the Notification Area for the Audio Control Panel.
Click it and look if the equalizer or effects have been turned off or reset.

When I right click on the speaker icon in my tray there is no "Audio Control Panel" ........there are other things but not that........

Please post what menu options you see when you right click.

I don't run Windows 10 so my Windows 7 choices might not be what Windows 10 offers.
    Open Volume Mixer
    Playback Devices
    Recording Devices
    Sounds
    Volume Control Options

If you Right click the Windows Icon. Choose Device Manager. Open the Sound video and game controllers section.
If one of the icons has a ! associated. Right click and click on update driver.

    Might work.

Control Panal > Hardware and sound > Realtek HD Audio Manager. Then on the realtek HD Audio manage see if SRS Premium sound is enabled. If so, disable it.

".....resolved it by reinstalling my IDT HD codec. You can either download it again from the hp site or go to SWSETUP folder on you HDD."

You might give that a try.

    1. Select IDT High Definition Audio CODEC on Device Manager.
    2. Select Driver tab.
    3. Click Update Driver... button.
    4. Select -> Browse my computer for driver software.
    5. Select -> Let me pickup a list of device drivers on my computer.
    6. Select High Definition Audio Device (Not IDT High Def... this is important.) and click Next. Appears Warning message, but reply Yes.

There's no volume slider in Device Manager...

Expand (double-click) Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager (post #21).
Take a screenshot and post it.

In the properties dialogue box, click on driver and see if you can roll it back.

What I would do in your situation is to Right click on High Definition Audio Device. From the options select uninstall device. Agree to the action and reboot.
As Windows opens it will see the audio device and reinstall itself afresh.
I'm not sure if this will do anything but I am struggling to find a solution.
    Good luck,

What is the name of the machine. My thought is to get the Manufacture's drivers...

Perhaps do a Driver Booster scan.

Driver Booster is ad-supported. When you open the downloaded exe file watch what you agree to. Click on decline to the bits you don't want. Then it's free.
