Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this but I figured I might as well try somewhere. I just recently bought a new HDD and installed it and loaded up windows xp on it (yes I said XP haha, its about a 7-8 yr old machine). There is basically nothing on it and I loaded up all my drivers for the motherboard and whatnot, and I still can't get the sound to work. Yes, I have it plugged in to where it always is. Not sure what the problem is. Would be great if someone could help me diagnosis this problem and fix it. Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you please give us some more info about your machine i.e make/model as this will help us to give you the correct info regarding your issue with the sound. Speccy is a good simple tool that will give us the info if you are not too sure..... http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

    Greetings, Spaniel1287.

If it's onboard audio you're referring to, check this page: click the 'Download' tab, select 'WinXP' - the SoundMax driver is listed under 'Audio'. I suggest using the 'Global' link instead of the 'GlobalDLM', so you won't have to use their download manager.

And, Speccy is listed here at MG. ;)

Thank you. I will try that right now. For some reason the onboard audio as well as the sound chip that i have in a PCI slot both dont work. It just seems odd to me because when i take the end that plugs into the computer, when it touches metal i can hear raspy sounds coming out of the speakers. Hopefully this fixes it.

Well i did this, and when it finished downloading I opened the file and tried to install it, and then a box comes up that says "drive not found please reboot your system and try again"

Is onboard audio enabled in BIOS?

If you have a PCI sound card (and don't know its make or model #), then follow up on iain.t's Speccy suggestion and post us the log.

What XP Service Pack # did you install? If it's not SP3, you might have to load the XP UAA driver (located here or here) before you load any sound drivers.

And, as far as the 'raspy' sound - that's poor shielding in either the speaker cables or in the speaker's internal wiring. Nothing to worry about as long as you don't hear it when everything's connected properly.

That was it! Thanks a ton! I rebooted the pc and then went to install the Audio driver for the onboard sound and it worked. Much better not working in silence now haha.

Good job - silence is not necessarily golden. ;)

Thanks for the feedback, and good luck to you. :major
