Sound problem and driver problem

I have a problem with sound as detailed in this thread:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=242116

I was told to try and attempt a malware removal. The problem basically is sometimes when I freeze or crash, my next startup is extremely slow, and my sound is disabled. When I attempt to reinstall my sound drivers it hangs after I confirm to delete, and even if I manage to reinstall the driver through a great deal of trouble it will still happen again. I've tried the original drivers on my computer, the ones from HP's site, and one from Realtek's site. Until the sound is working again, I can't turn off my computer through windows and I have to press the power button.

I'm not sure if I got the right SAS log because the instructions were extremely hard to follow, I think they might be outdated. Also, I can't get RootRepeal to run, all I see is "Initializing, please wait..." then it hangs. I've waited half an hour and I don't think it's going to run. I did get the other 4 logs though.

This is not likley to be related to malware and your logs are all clean. I will have you run two additional scans just to be safe but I do not expect it to find anything that would be the cause of this problem.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Okay MBRCheck does indicate potential problems with the MBR on two drives as shown below
    Code:

74 GB [URL="file://\\.\PhysicalDrive0"]\\.\PhysicalDrive0[/URL] Unknown MBR code
                SHA1: EC5B6F4B08268D5344F30BFF61C8B587F034795B
232 GB [URL="file://\\.\PhysicalDrive1"]\\.\PhysicalDrive1[/URL] RE: Unknown MBR code

It is possible that this is just due to the way the Compac setup the partition to have a place to store a recovery partition but it is also very possible that it is really an infection. Repairing the MBR by replacing it with a valid Windows XP MBR is the only logical choice to be sure expecially since you are having problems with your PC. But do note that rewriting your non-standard MBR from Compac, could make future use of the Recovery Partition impossible which means you really do need a Windows XP boot CD so that you could reinstall from it if it every becomes necessary.

    Questions:
    1. Is the 232 GB drive an removal drive or is it a built in hard disk?
    2. Do you have all of your important data backed up ( not backed up on either of these drives that is )? If not, you need to do that before continuing.
    3. Do you have your Windows Boot CD which will be needed to repair your Master Boot Record?

    1. - it's a USB external harddrive
    2. - most of it is backed up to the external drive, i'd have to purchase another one to back it up to a drive that isn't either of these two.
    3. - No, all I have is 8 recovery disks that the previous owner made, I'm not sure exactly what they're for though, they just have 'recovery disk 1 of 8, 2 of 8', etc written on them

I think I might be able to get my hands on another external drive that I can temporarily use, but I don't want to rely on that. Also, is it possible to download something to a CD that I can use in place of an XP disk, or would that be illegal?

I'm not really positive that your problems with sound are actually due to malware. Also not positive that your unknown MBR is really due to an infection. The only way to know would be to attempt fixing it and see what happens.

What I suggest is that you backup all of your important data first, then UNPLUG and leave unplugged the USB drive to only have your internal hard disk running.

Then since you say you do not have a Windows XP Boot CD, you will have to try something like below.

See what was posted in message # 12 of the below thread and see if you can get this CD to run.

    whistler/black internet@mbr again!

Use it to fix the MBR on your hard disk and then boot back into normal Windows. See if your sound problems are fixed. Also re-run MBRcheck and attach the new log. Make sure that you do not plug the USB drive back into your PC until I tell you to do so.

I feel as if I may have found the problem. The issue popped up again recently, so I tried seeing if this box of blank CD's I had were indeed blank, but I noticed they weren't being noticed by My Computer or autorun, so I tried some of my music Cd's and they weren't being found either. I unplugged the power cable running from the power supply to the dvd drive and tried uninstalling and reinstalling my sound drivers, and everything went perfectly. So until I can find out if I indeed have a bad dvd drive (this would be the second one in the past 2 years or so I'll have to replace), I can't try the MBR fix, but I'll make the cd and try it anyway. I'll come back once I can confirm what's wrong or if I have the new MBR log.
