    Hi all,

please help to solve this mystery.

I have a HP Compaq dc5100 MT pc, running windowxp,

recently i formatted and reinstalled xp, but everything except sound was working. Before reinstallation and after reinstallation the Audio driver used was Soundmax (to make sure I searched in HP site and I downloaded and installed the soundmax driver for this make/brand of pc)

    There are few funny things.
With sound max driver - no sound coming from internal speaker, but sound is there thru headphone,

I uninstalled soundmax and installed realteck AC97 (WDM400) - this time sound is there from internal speaker, but no sound from headphone.not only that even I plugged in the headphone pin the sound still coming from internal speaker.

and I cannot mute or reduce the master volume control, if want to mute or reduce voulume I have to adjust with the Wave control.

How can I solve it, I want the internal speaker gives sound. when head phone plugged in it should work and internal speaker to be stopped and master volume control to be functioning. anybody please help me

Just wondering if you are sure that you are using the same drivers after reinstall that you had before and not an update. Is there another set of drivers available like an older version to try. FYI I use a program called DriverGuide Toolkit that makes a backup of all my installed drivers so I can be sure that I am installing the same driver without having to identify and search for them. I get confused with the different ways companies identify the versions.

Also, are there any additional software programs to install for the soundcard to add more options and a control panel or mixer control for audio? My soundcard has programs and updates for the mixer, audio hq and media center.

    Cuzndupree,

Thanks for your reply. Actually before do formatting and reinstalling I did a backup of drivers using driver genius, I used that backup drivers and checked, but the problem I described was there, SO I went to HP website and downloaded the audio driver, same problem, (these two were soundmax), then I tried with Realtek.

When you say you have to use the wave control to adjust the volume you are referring to the windows volume control and not the volume control that comes with your soundcard? What about updates for your driver or soundcard software. If I remember correctly when I reinstalled my soundcard I had to start with the original installation disc before I updated the driver to the current version. Also to uninstall it was recommended to do a complete uninstall before reinstalling which included deleting some additional files as well as using the uninstall function. I had to do it a couple of times to get it right because I had to follow a particular sequence when reinstalling. I know you mentioned you had reformatted, but since then you have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times. You might check with your soundcard website to see if there is a procedure to do a complete uninstall before trying to reinstall. There is a program called called "DH Drive Cleaner" that will clean up any references to the soundcard before reinstalling. It has an option for a Soundmax soundcard as well as other drivers. You need to be sure and follow the directions carefully or it could screw up your system. I think the soundcard is tricky to install because it is tied in with so many other components of the os.

    Hi,

I'll comeback to you after 2days (bcoz I have a holiday for 2 days)

Regarding adjusting volume, I have to double click the speaker Icon from task bar (near clock) and adjuct the volume from Wave tab.

I will try disk cleaning and reinstallation.

    Hi,

I installed DH Driver Cleaner.NET and used that.

after unistalling the realtek driver I ran the softwarewhile running selected realtek and soundmax for removal.

Then Installed soundmax from the downloaded file from HP website,
repeated the uninstallation and used the DH software and removed soundmax, bcoz it was not functioning.

Then installed soundmax from the driver genius backed up drivers, found not working. so used again DH software and installed realtek.

Now I am in the same old situation
    # sounds are coming from the internal speaker (speaker insider cpu connected to motherboard, not the speaker making beep sounds while starting the PC)
    # If head phone is connected, still sound coming from internal speaker, not thru headphone
    # cannot mute from the speaker icon in taskbar
#cannot reduce volume from speaker icon, (if want to reduce, double click the speaker Icon and adjust the volume under Wave)

So what I have to do????????

Can you verify your soundcard is installed under device manager? Can be found in control panel/performance and maintenance/system/hardware/ device manager/sounds and video your soundcard should be listed, right click and select properties, it should say it is working properly and the option at the bottom says to" use this device". next select the properties tab and select your soundcard and select properties it should have the use audio features on this device selected. click ok and next select the mixer and it should have your soundcard listed again if you have a mixer control for it. select properties and select "use mixer features on this device". click ok. next go to control panel/sounds,speech and audio devices/sounds and audio devices, at the bottom where it says speakers setting select volume and make sure volume is at least half way. click ok. next to it select advance and in the drop down list your speaker setup that you are using should be selected, "Desktop Speakers" or whatever your setup is. click ok, just above that is device volume, make sure that the mute option is not checked, click advance and make sure play control is not muted. if play control is not visible select option/properties and check play control option. click ok just to check go back to sounds and audio devices properties and select the audio tab. your soundcard should be listed under sound playback as default device. I am not sure if your soundcard has a mixer control for it so if it doesn't you have to use the windows mixer for volume control and sound source selection. I have underlined it above for reference. Whew, and thats is about all I can think of that has to do with the audio on your pc. I am assuming that your soundcard has been installed correctly. Hope that helps

    Dear Cuzndupree,

Thanks for your detailed reply for checking out, I went thru all those you told, and I did not changed anything bcoz everything was listed or selected correctly by default.

    I mean,
it is listed in device control, working properly, no yellow exclamation mark, enabled.

In multimedia devices section (properties of the soundcard) soundcard is listed in midi, audio, and mixer properties (BUT THE SETTING ARE NOT SELECTABLE)

no mute, volume halfway etc are also ok,

for your info it is a motherboard built in soundcard (not added pci card)

35 What version of DirectX does SoundMAX require?

SoundMAX requires DirectX 9.0 or greater. You can download DirectX from the Microsoft website.

After you reinstalled did you update to this version of DX 9? What are you using to test the sound with windows media player?

19 How do I change the sound volume level?

The Windows mixer controls volume levels and some other audio controls.

To bring up the mixer (shown below), double click on the speaker icon speaker icon in the system tray on the bottom right part of the desktop.
    Volume control

Windows contains a simple audio mixer which controls the audio. The "Balance" slider controls the left-right balance. The "Volume" slider controls loudness. The "Mute" buttons stop all sound for that item.

This is the direction for adjusting the volume level in the soundmax help section. From what I can tell from your post this is what you have now, but it is not the way you did it before. The directions above suggest that the audio source and playback is supposed to be controlled from the windows mixer. From what I can get from your post you were using something else. Is that correct? FYI on my computer, muting the speakers when the headphones are plugged in is an option that I need to select in my soundcard software. Since you are using the same driver package and hardware it must be the os. Have you searched microsoft for a patch for your chipset? Some people have resorted to a complete reinstall to fix the problems.

I reread you post and I might have some help on one of your issues. In regards to your ability to control your volume and mute from the speaker icon I addressed this in my detailed post but maybe it was not clear. If you go to Control Panel/Sounds,Speech, and Audio Devices/Sounds and Audio Devices, you should see your Sounds and Audio Devices properties page. Under device volume the place volume icon on your taskbar option should be checked. Then select advanced and select options in the menu and select properties. At the top is the mixer choice, use the drop down list to select your device if not already selected. Next click the playback radio button and all the playback volume controllers will be listed. Make sure play control is checked. Click Ok and close. You should be able to mute and control volume from the speaker icon now. As far as your headphones I am not sure but they may show as an option in the volume controller list. If so try checking that also to activate and control level.

    Hope this helps

    Hi,

I before also I checked and yesterday I checked again and I found everything there already selected as you described, for me there in no play control but it is listed as volume control.

to refresh your memmory I am writing the below again:

    now Installed is realtek driver.
with that internal (inside CPU, not the system spk for making beep) speker is working. When connecting headphone still internal speaker is working and not any voice from Headphone).

When installing SoundMax (original from HP website) it is in reverse order. only head phone working, if remove head phone from socket no sound from Internal speaker.

if go thru all the option for sound (in control panel) everything is selected as you described

Ok I have a couple of questions. I am a little confused about your sound device. You say that it is an integrated audio device but I am unsure why you are installing a driver for soundmax or realtek soundcard. Are these the drivers that your motherboard requires? I know that some are indicated as "integrated audio drivers". They can usually be found at you pc website. Have you checked your BIOS to make sure that the integrated audio is enabled? Also when you reinstalled did you update to sp2 afterwards or was it slipstreamed into the install disc? I remember reading that there are some conflicts with some driver installations when sp2 is not slipstreamed in the installation disc.

I don't know if this helps but I am trying to think of all possible causes for your issues.

I have posted some download links for BIOS, Chipset, and Integrated Audio Drivers for your pc. Check these out to see if they are what you need.

    Hi,

There in no need for confusion.

If you download the audior driver file from HP website and run, it is installing soundmax driver (I am not selecting it). (even the splash screen while starting installation says soundMAX CADENZA.)

I tried to install the downloaded file from the 2nd link you given, and when restarted the PC it was giving error (missing file or corrupted file) on pce.sys. , So I used the last good configuration to start windows again.

I am using realtek because it can give sound thru speaker (but not headphone working).
