    XP home, sp3

I have removed some malware, a lot really. the system is running nicely.

I have no sound from the mobo sound out. Opening Sound Properties everything is grayed out. What can I do? I was thinking to uninstall all the codecs and start over installing the properties but is this the best route?

    thanks

You might need to reinstall your sound drivers in Hardware>Device Manager.

I went to HP for the unit, downloaded and installed the package although the installation was over what was already on the computer. I can uninstall the software then the hardware on the computer. I already uninstalled the hardware once with the OS finding and putting the hardware enabled again.

Try just uninstalling the drivers in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, then reboot and let Windows find its own drivers.
Is everything greyed out under Sounds and Audio Devices?

Yes, everything is gone in all the tabs. I don't have anything showing.

It is grayed out under the Sound Properties found from the Control Panel. I have a list of audio and video codecs I don't think belongs. Any way to remove these and start fresh? I looked for a Uninstall on the codecs but none was found.

I uninstalled the MIDI and SoundMax audio and rebooted. The sound properties dialog box in the control panel is still grayed out.

You shouldn't uninstall the Codecs, so that's OK.

Try Control Panel>Admin Tools>Component Services>Services and make sure Audio or Windows Audio is enabled and started.

Check your BIOS setting (tap Delete key while booting).
    Look for Audio.
On mine, it's under Integrated Peripherals>SB200 Onchip PCI Device>Onboard AC97 Audio.
Mine is set to Auto (rather than Off)

You can try uninstalling all items under Sound, Video and Game Controllers in Device Manager, except the Codecs, then reboot. Does it ask you for a CD or similar when you do this?

sorry, a little, well a lot, slow on the response. When i uninstalled there wasn't a request for a CD or other file to reinstall hardware.
I am away from the computer for the services check and the bios check.
