I'm not sure I'm posting in the right area, If it's wrong, Sorry!
I recently had to reformat my computer. Unfortunately there were some
problems afterwards. I've fixed most of them (display, etc.) but I
cannot get the sound to work.
    Here's the problem
No volume control-sndvol.exe will not run (when I try to open it
    nothing happens)
The only device issue is PCI communications device
Looked all over and tried a million drivers to get it fixed-I've used
the windows cd, windows update, driverguides tool-kit, etc.
    Any ideas?
    Tia

Ok, I did that, but it doesn't appear to have worked. When I ran it , it made me restart and on restart it came up with a bunch of new hardware and went through the process of setting them up. But on 2 of them a file was missing and it told me to insert the Windows 98 disk. I did but I couldn't find the files.
The device and missing files are:
    Intel(r) 82801AA PCI Bridge - pci.sys
    Intel(r) 82801AA LPC Interface Controller - isapnp.sys
I told it to skip the file.

And the PCI Communication Device still has the problem (Code 28)
    Any more ideas?
    Thanks
    Tia

goto dev manager > right click pci bridge > resources.. any conflicts there?

what items are in "sound, video and game controllers"?

ok. when I right click my only choices are refresh, remove, print, properties.
Under properties it says: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28.) I'm not even sure that this is the sound problem- I just remembered I don't have the phone modem installed because I have DSL and it wasn't working. (One of the problems I had after reformatting it.)
Under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
    -Gameport Joystick
    -MPU-401 Compatible
    -Realtek AC'97 Audio

Also, I've tried to install the Realtek AC'97 Audio Drivers and it goes through the whole process and when I restart it updates settings, but stops about 3/4 of the way through. I've let it go for about 30-45 minutes and it doesn't get any further. I had to "end task" to be able to start the computer. Should I redo it and let it go longer? (The little drumsticks keep moving , but the progress bar doesn't move)

    Thanks
    Tia

oh... i meant right click PCI bus > properties > resources... and checking for any I/O or IRQ conflicts.

you might try control panel > multimedia > make sure you audio device is selected under preferred device

    Duh, I knew that.
    It says:
This device isn't using any resources because it is not currently enabled or it has a problem.

It also says that I can set the resources manually. How can we figure out if this is the root of the sound problem or if this is from the modem?

Also, when I was checking to see if sndvol32.exe was working after trying the Intel stuff, I accidently clicked on sndrec32.exe and got a box that said:
Sound Recorder cannot record or play back because a sound device is not installed.
Don't know if this helps but I figured I'd tell you

Sounds to me like it may be set to "disabled" in bios. Try booting into " bios setup", and looking for AC97 sound. Make sure it's enabled.

at this point you might want to create a new hardware profile... right click my computer > hardware profiles > select your current hardware profile and select copy ... then reboot and press spacebar after post to select your new config then edit the resources. Now you can edit the resources manually w/o fear of screwing things up. Remember which profile you are editing and select that one when appropriate, obviously if you edit both profiles you can screw it up. And make matters much worse.

try uninstalling the sound drivers in "sound, video and game controllers" then installing the most recent ones from HERE .. unless you already have.

although it seems to me you wouldn't be able to use any device on the PCI chain if your PCI bus is not enabled. You might try setting the default under settings and IRQ steering in the pci properties.

also, does it work in safe mode? press F8 after post and before the windows splash screen.

ok, it doesn't work in safe mode either. I've also tried changing the settings in bios, IT was auto to begin with, then I tried enabled then disabled (The hp site said to do that) then reset it default. So still no sound. I also tried removing the volume control in windows setup and reinstalling it. That didn't work either.
I'm not sure what changes to make with the configuration.
    Any more thoughts?
    Tia

In device manager, select "view devices by connection", the goto plug and play> PCI bus, How many of those items works?

I am not understanding how you can surf the net, yet your PCI Bus is not operating? Assuming you're using a PCI card to connect.

"And the PCI Communication Device still has the problem (Code 28)"

Are you sure that's not the modem? You might remove that altogether if you're not using it. One possibility is that your computer thinks that's the default sound device.

Ok, I went ahead and pulled the modem and found the model number. I put it back and installed the correct driver so the "pci communications device" is talen care of. I uninstalled the realtek drivers so now under other I have pci multimedia device listed. I can't find the right driver for it. When I veiw by connection under pci bus the only problem now is the pci cmultimedia device.
I tried going to the http://support.asus.com/download/do...SLanguage=en-us
to get the right audio driver but the crystal driver listed also doesn't work. Any thoughts on what should I do now?
    Thanks

    I have sound!!!!

Thanks for all your help. I now have sound. :) I ran the PCWizard. Based on the pcwizard's findings I went to driverguide.com and searched for Intel sound cards model AC 97 and found one that worked (intel82810ac97audio). I now have sound! Thank you so much for your help!
