    First Welcome to MG. :)

Second Go to the Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and make sure the volume is set at a reasonable level and the mute option is NOT ticked. Then click on the advanced tab and make sure that Mute all isn't ticked and the Wave isn't muted too.

In that case go to the Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager then click on the + sign next to Sound Video and Game Controllers and see if you have any yellow exclamation marks. Also check the sound card you have aalso appears in the list of course.

Well there should be an icon there but not to worry. You can get to the same place by Right Clicking on the My Computer icon and then selecting properties at the bottom of the menu list.

OK apart from the Legacy devices does it list your sound card? eg Creative SB if you had a Sound Blaster card or possibly AC97? If you're not sure list what it does have (you can ignore the Lagacy Devices.)

nope i have none of that...i think i am installing a driver now....but anyways what would u reccommend now??

If you are installing a driver what is it for? All drivers are for specific devices - in other words you need the right driver for the sound device (card) you have.

So what other devices are listed under rhe Sounds in the device Manager? Are there any Devices anywhere (not just in sounds) that are labelled as Unknown Devices?

You could tell me the mobo - I can then check if it has onboard sound.

ok so under sounds i have the following list:
    audio codecs
    legacy video capture devices
    media cntrl devic
    video codecs
along with legacy audio drivers and that is it under sound, video and game

    Yargwel MajorGeek

Well that explains why you have no sound - there's no sound device to play through. Were there any Unknown devices? And what is your mobo?

no there was nothing else in that list, so no unkown devices...what is mobo, somewthing with motherboard?? my motherboard # or type or whatever is d915gav

You'll find the driver you need here

It is the second one in the list labelled as Audio Driver for Realtek ALC880 and ALC860

so i am running it or whatever, installing it, so what happens after that...am i done or are there further steps?

First you download it. Then as it's a zip file you need to unzip it to a folder using WinZip or the like. Then you will need to run its setup or install program.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

The driver I pointed you towards was for Windows XP. You do have XP don't you?

You may need to also install the download at the top of the page I'd sent you to before. Try installing that first before the audio driver.
