SourceForge Problem

When I download a SourceForge application, all I get is a 20k or so .php file. That's using Firefox with Flashgot using FreeDownloadManager or Flashget downloaders.

Sometimes, if I try IE, I get the actual file but sometimes get only the .php file. Opera seems to work all the time. I've asked this at SourceForge a couple of times over the past year and get no response.

    Anyone have any ideas?

No problem here. That's my usual solution - find some non-SourceForge source. This only happens with application downloads from SourceForge, but the same download from any other site nearly always works (sometimes sites are overloaded which has nothing to do with this problem).

This may be a first. I seem to be the only person having this problem. I wonder if I have this problem on my laptop? I usually download, test, and decide if I want the app on my desktop. If it looks good and maybe useful on the laptop, I send the installer to a network drive.

in short you have to click one step further to get a direct link to the files.

take for example the 7-zip download page:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/7-Zip_d4603.html

all the download links appear to point directly to the files..
try to save them and you get the ~20kb download.php

Problem solved at Nerd Help. These scripted links confuse download managers. I used to shift to IE and get downloads. I never use IE except where Firefox doesn't work, but sometime ago Flashget got installed into IE so I was having the problem there too. Recently I've used Opera for downloads and that works great (and fast).

They recommended disabling Flashget. That works but I tried that once some time ago and it didn't work then so I must have disabled Flashget and then forgot to reload Firefox. I also tried another work around by clicking on the link "if you are having problems" and that worked when I tested it on 7-Zip, but I've done that before and it didn't work on another file.

I had this problem with Free Download Manager and Flashget, both of which are managed by Flashgot in Firefox. So I have to guess the problem is with Flashgot. There are three work arounds:
    1) Disable Flashgot and reload Firefox (use a session manager to get back to the download page quickly).
    2) When a SourceForge downloading page appears, click on the "having problems downloading" link and let the download manager do its thing on that link.
    or
    3) Use Opera to download

I would agree and I did have that problem some time ago, but my FDM has been disabled for months. I have Flashgot use Flashget. I checked for conflicts between 'got and 'get but didn't find anything online.

Your response got me thinking about FDM though. Just in case, I am going to remove FDM from my computer. I haven't used it in ages. Thanks.

I don't know. After reading that post, I reinstalled fdm, set FlashGot to use fdm. Tried 7-Zip from SourceForge. Only got the php file. Tried other mirrors, and still got only php. Changed FlashGot back to using FlashGet and got the php, but a mirror worked fine. In the past, I've removed all download managers from Firefox. At one time I even removed Firefox (but since all the ini/settings were saved, this probably didn't do much). I thought I was the only one having the problem but it seems like others (on other tech support sites) have the same problem and the workarounds have been the only solutions.

I've been in computers since 1962 and PC since 1981 and I'm probably a power user. But its been 25 years since I did any coding or real computer work other than installing system for small businesses and training employees. I no longer have the technical expertise to argue or agree with you. But I can now download SourceForge apps, even if I need to use a clutsy workaround.
