SP2 installation freezes

Hi,

I've been updating the OS on the computers for a couple of family members. A couple were done without a hitch. However, when I tried to do this for my father's computer this morning (going from XP SP1 to XP SP2), after finishing the installation, the computer would not successfully restart. I have tried to start it in safe mode, last normal configuration, and normally but it always freezes on the Windows screen and will not boot. Any suggestions about how to address?

How long is a freeze. Is the hard drive light running? It could be taking awhile to install.

 

I've had it running for 1/2 an hour to an hour and it hasn't gone anywhere. Is this typical? If not, what are some possible options?

 

I'm also not sure where the hard drive light is on this particular computer (there are a lot of lights on it). However, the window seems to be solidly frozen and there is no movement on the windows window . . .
