What are the advantages and disadvantages to uninstalling SP2? XP Home

I will say this, removing SP2 in WinXP is a huge security risk and is not recommended. This particular update has a lot of security for the WinXP OS, not only that SP1 is no longer supported by MS.

    What he said. :)

And...removing a service pack ahs the potential to hose everything installed after...assuming the uninstall even leaves your computer booting.

What happened was that I did a repair install and, after, SP2 was gone. The WMP and iTunes won't work any longer and the Disc defragmenter won't work. One thing, though, Mozilla seems to be running a lot faster. I downloaded SP2 and have to install it.

Ever finish the malware thread? If not sp/2 will be a disaster.

I think I got all the malware. There was nothing in the malware threads that I didn't try. BTW, wouldn't the repair install have removed and replaced any corrupted files? The Virus burster icons stopped appearing.

Yes it would have "fixed" system files ...but not remove any remnants of viruses ...so having problems with icons and programs after a repair install would make me question as to whether or not you are really malware free.:)

You posted in malware, got a reply, and never reposted for them to check your system .....so how do you know you are malware free?

You're right. The two things that I don't remember doing from when my PC had Spyquake are Shownew and Runkeys. Can you give me an idea what those two apps do? I'd like to know what it is I'm looking for.

If you had SP2 before and after the repair did not then the disc you used for the reapir did not have SP2, it had SP1 or SP1a which is why you're having problems. If you have WinXP SP2 and do a repair with a XP SP1 disc then you may experience a few problems.
