Spam Ethics

Hello, I am a new member here, and I am unfamiliar with the local ettiquette. I want to learn, though.

Apparently I started a thread that would be considered spam as my first post not too long ago. I didn't realize it at the time, but it got me to thinking about what other types of posts are considered spam.

So far, I understand spam as follows:

1) An unsolicited advertisement from a business
2) Posting one's own internet address

What am I missing?

I read your first posts and your blog.
Sorry I'm not a blogger and can offer no assistance there.
But am even sorrier for how I assume your first welcome made you feel.

What makes spam on a site can be a little bit subjective and
context sensitive, and sometimes people are just cranky.
If you had not posted a link, then sure as crap someone would have
asked for a link to check it out.

Hope someone can give you some positive tips or resources to check out.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking in terms of promoting the blog at all. I just thought that I'd include the link just in case anyone wanted to see it. I belong to another forum, but they don't seem to mind that kind of thing very much over there. I can see how a place like this might be different, though, insofaras you probably get a lot of people blatantly trying to promote themselves here.

As this occasionally becomes an issue with some folks, what about hiding the post count in the forums on each person's posting, and just leave it on their profile, as it is now. It might reduce the desire to have a post-count competition amongst some??

That doesn't help much, you still get people spamming posts.

And some of us are just more 'vocal' that others.

 

Being vocal because you have something to say is not an issue.

Being vocal so you can watch your post count number rise and rise is! By removing the number from being so prominent takes away that urge to compete for the highest number simply because you can, regardless of whether you have anything of substance to say.
