Spam with replies....again?

Seems MG's was hit pretty hard last night by a spammer..what I don't get is why 2 members in particular who were previously asked NOT to reply to these spam threads, just report them still chose to do so?

Please keep in mind that even one reply to a spam thread gives the spammer exactly what they want...ATTENTION! They don't care if it's negative or postive as long as the thread is active. Replying bumps the thread to the top of the forum thus reflecting poorly on MG's. Going to any forum and the first thing you see at the top of the page is a spam thread looks bad.

Please report the thread as spam and we'll take care of it. (Don't reply to it.) And BTW..we DO know how to do that:p:D...while you may think telling us what steps we need to take in order to rid the forum of the spammer to ensure they don't return, I can assure you we not only know what we are doing but your "instructions" do not take into consideration the variables individual to each registered member.

For those that don't know how to report a thread/post: Every post has an 'report a bad post icon' --> http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f368/star-n-abby/reportpost.gif in the upper right corner of the post. Click that and it will take you to a page where you can enter your comments. If it's a spam post you can simply say spam or if it's something else like a thread that needs to be moved or a link to something bad..something brief is all that's needed. Click send report and we get an instant email on it. Piece of cake and a big help to us!:)

Thanks everyone for helping us keep MG's spam free!:)http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f368/star-n-abby/smilies/beertoast.gif

    Serves as a bump too

Yes it would as all you are doing is lowering yourself to their level and behaving no better, you would also be giving them the satifaction that their tactic worked of getting you to notice their junk.

AS the admins cannot be here 24/7, unless a bad, spam or trolling post is reported they can be missed for hours, thus giving the spammers thread some time for views, by reporting we all get email alerts with the thread link and a small explanation why its been reported, so then we can act quicker as it would take me and the others hours to go through every forum/post to weed these out.

So help keep Majorgeeks spam free and REPORT, cheers :)

Sorry, I forgot for a second my sense of humor doesn't translate well in text form.

In all seriousness, I agree totally with what you are saying and appreciate the thread. I really was wondering what that icon was.

Very true humour doesnt translate in text too well, I have to always re-read some of my posts.. because even EU humour is different to US humour.

Ah. So was I, and I wasn't aware how to report posts on this forum. It's something that I've been wondering lately since I've seen hackers making attempts on other forums lately.

Thank you for the information, and clear instructions on how to handle such situations. :)

    (I'll do a happy dance too. :) )

    Nice button :)

Would it be possible to add an "original comment" button that would link you to that end of the thread where the original comment is? I like to come in with the most recent comments first, but it's nice to know what the original topic was.

yeah, but that's not what I want, to know what they do. I want an icon I can push on that shows me the original post. It's hard for me to keep on track, you know? I get distracted by the humor.

I wasn't referring to your post. I was referring to those who said they were wondering what that icon did. Obviously, there isn't an icon you can mouse over that will tell you it does what you want it to, because to the best of my knowledge that is not a feature of vBulletin software. It might be a hack that can be added if there's need for it, but this is the first time I've ever seen it requested in five years of visiting various message boards that use the software.

Actually...to see the original post, just click on the thread title. That brings you to the first post in the thread. There's really no need for a special button that does it.

okay, so the thread title ... that is like ... where?
my point is maybe too greedy. yes, that's it's. I'm greedy.

I get these great e-mail notifications with links that send me straight to the newest posts in here, but since I'm following at least 10 threads at once, I don't always remember which title goes with which set of comments, and having a reminder of the thread description would help right there where I land from the e-mail link. But then ... I don't know a lot about how websites work, so I don't know if what I'd like is something difficult. This website as a whole has impressed me a lot.

Humor is much like beauty: Totally in the eye of the beholder, IMHO. To me, AbbySue is both humorous AND beautiful. But, you may not have seen her picture. I have.

You can't click on the thread title by someone's name, you have to click on the one that is actually a link. You'll know which one that is because it is underlined. It can be found in the forum itself, or you can find it at the top of the page when you either quote someone or use the "reply" button. It does NOT work if you use the quicky reply box.

I don't know how to help you if you're following the email link, since the entire point of those is to take you to the comments you haven't yet seen in a thread. I don't use email notification myself. I just come here and click on the little arrow that takes me to the newest posts in threads I'm interested in. Or, if I can't remember what they're about, I click on the thread title (which takes me to the first post) to refresh my memory, then I click on the "view first unread" post to take me to where I left off.

    Hi AbbySue,
I don't have a warning sign on my posts (at least I can't see it) and I don't really want to report something about other people's posts. What I'd like to know is how to reach an administrator directly. I've had such strange problems happening the past couple of days, that I wanted to ask someone who would know, if they are normal. Also, I would like something removed from one of the threads that I posted myself, and I don't know who to ask about that. Thanks!

As Abby maybe not back online for a bit, I can help you with the "something removed from a thread" ( PM me the thread link and what you need removing ), but the missing warning sign and the weird things you are getting with the ball and Firefox, as I cannot re-create those anomalies at present I cannot help you with as yet.

You won't have a "report this post" button on your own posts...the software assumes you won't want to report yourself as not having followed the rules. The whole point of the link is to report other people's posts that don't follow the rules.

    Hi Sgt. Tibbs!
I thought that might be the case, so I wondered if there is a normal way one contacts an administrator without posting his/her request in the public area.

Yep just PM one of the Admin team and they will be glad to change or look at what you need on your own post.
