I installed speedfan on my computer, and it is able to report the temperatures of the core 2 processor, but it does not show that it recognizes the 4-pin heatsink-fan connected to the intel motherboard.
Why wouldn't it list this fan as present? I want to be able to control the speed of this fan, and also this fan is always running at a low speed which concerns me that the motherboard may not be controlling the speed of the fan either.
    Please help

Look at the fan connect, is it 2 or 3 pins. The 2 pin headers aren't able to by controlled because its the third pin that controls fan speed and reports that.

The heatsinkfan is zalman, it has a 4-pin connector which is connected to a 4-pin fan header on the motherboard. Based on this, I don't understand why speedfan does not recognize the fan or give an option to control it's speed. Also, the motherboard itself does not seem to be controlling the fan (as it's speed is always low). The zalman fan has PWM control.

sorry i was incorrect in the 2-3 apperently its 3-4, but thats not gonna help you. As far as your problem im not sure then, perhaps the monitoring chip in your mobo is fully supported in speed fan? Speedfan manual should contain a list of support fans and such, check to make sure your hardware is supported. Other then that im out of ideas.

dont worry about the fan running at low speeds, core 2 duos run very cool. if it needs to the fan will speed up. run Orthos for a little while to get the temps up and see if the fan speeds up

what are your current temps on the proc?

Current processor temp is 29-30 C at idle, but that quickly rises to 34-35 C with any process. When CPU is at 90% load temperature rises to 40C which is too high and the processor fan does not speed up. Motherboard is Intel DG965RY. Maybe I need the Intel utility that allows you to control fan speeds because right now the MB is not controlling the processor fan even though it is connected to the 4-pin header. Any ideas?

is the fan set to adjust itself in the BIOS? i know ASUS motherboards have Q-Fan, maybe yours has something similar

The BIOS has no option for adjusting fan speed; it only has an option called Fan Control which allows you to choose options for automatic fan detection - you can choose always on, disabled, or next boot. Anyway, the MB is an Intel DG965RY, and the documentation says it supports third-party software control of fans and sensors, but speedfan is not working with it.

If you have a speed controller controlling the fan that came with the zalman it can auto disable your motherboard speed controller, make sure your zalman speed control is set to maximum,if you can remove the zalman fan controller from the loop and connect the fan directly into the cpu fan header then enable any fan 'smart temperature' controllers in bios :)
