XP running slowly can be caused by many, MANY different things. Excessive drive fragmentation, corrupt software, lack of RAM or bad RAM, dying hard drive, OS file system could be 'out-of-whack', etc etc etc.
After following Bill's guide linked to above, try running a memory diagnostic for an extended amount of time (look for one here). Download and run an extended diagnostic on your hard drive; you can download it for free from your hard drive maker's web site. Running "chkdsk" can help solve file system problems. To schedule chkdsk to run when the PC boots up, follow these steps: click Start > Run and type cmd and press Enter. A black "DOS" window will open. Type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter. You will get a question about forcing a dismount of the volume or something very similar, answer No. You'll then get a question about scheduling chkdsk to run at the next restart, answer Yes. Type exit and press Enter. The next time the PC restarts, chkdsk will run, and it may take some time so be patient and let it do its thing. DO NOT cancel chkdsk! DO NOT shut down or reset the PC in mid-chkdsk!! If you still have extreme slowness after trying everything in Bill's link above, and after trying everything I've just mentioned, let us know and we'll try some other things.... good luck!

    :-D

(NOTE: the chkdsk command has a space before and after the "c:" and the command will not work if the spaces are left out)

Do you have any alpha or beta programs installed?

How many RAMS do you have?

Perhaps your hard drive is on the brink.

Maybe your hard drive is full with all kinds of programs and data.
