So I just got my new PC and while I like it, Vista came with it. So I immediately deleted all Norton stuff, and all Microsoft office stuff and i saw I noticeable increase in the speed of my pc.

So is there any suggestions on how to further the speed increase? Any user friendly articles that I can read to better assist me?

    Hi Brahman,

By default, Vista automatically starts many services on boot up. some of these services don't need to be auto started and can manually start when called upon by windows or another program.

Here's a vid walk through on services

If you check the net, you'll find many resources which will recommend which services to modify.

This one's for Vista SP2, other choices are down the left-hand column http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm read it VERY carefully (change the page colour if you prefer a white background ;)).

You can manually check for unneeded services here http://www.processlibrary.com/

Ensure you have FULLY removed all Norton products by running their removal tool http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

Probably too late now, I think but using PC-De-Crapifier may have been a good way to begin the cleanup process http://majorgeeks.com/PC_De-Crapifier_d5223.html

I'd replace Adobe Reader with Foxit Reader (http://majorgeeks.com/Foxit_Reader_d4763.html), remove Java (use JavaRA http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRA_d5982.html) and Flash and update them to the latest versions, all three are security risks if not fully patched.

To install the latest version of Flash (http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-FLASH NB, use this link from ALL browsers on your PC to be sure they are all using the latest version).

Other things to check later are those tasks begun via the Task Scheduler. Defrag for instance, has been a known slowdown issue for some - maybe better to replace that with eg. JKDefragui and run it manually.

I tried this site, I got rid of all Norton, which helped a ton, then I got rid of a bunch of useless games, a few of the pc(ads) programs that wanted me to use for a month then buy it, and I got rid of all microsoft office stuff. Then ran the CC cleaner. After all that I saw a definite improvement. I will be checking everyone else's recommendations soon. Thanks for the help guys.
