I was just wondering if you guys wanna post your internet speeds. I read a lot about people getting ripped off by their ISP`s and not getting what they pay for. I get nearenough what Im supposed to, as Halo said to me once you hardly ever get bang-on due to traffic etc.

If any one wants to do this goto here http://www.speedtest.net/ and click on the reccomended test server. When its done you will get a reading that comes up, goto where it says Forum Link and click copy then paste it here. Include the name of your ISP, country and what speed your actually supposed to be getting.

    Ill start it off then...

Was the first one at work Halo or home?

What Mbit should you get Halo + Clark?

    Work Wayne :)

1st one is capped at 20mbit ( depends on amount of users online at once as that figure can drop to less than 10mbit )
2nd is variable but seems capped at 1mbit but is supposed to be 8mbit, which is prompting me to be about t migrate to BE Interent and their 24mbit ADSL2+ service, doubt because of line lenght I will get 24mbit but db tests on line noise seem to indicate I should get 8-10mbit.

If you can get cable in your area Halo, they are upgrading their top package to 20mbit very very soon. And ive not really heard much bad about them. I get the 3 for 30 deal.

However they have followed suit with all the others with the fair usage rubbish. If you download too much they reduce your speed for 3 hours. 2mbit goes to 1mbit, 8 goes to 4, and 10(soon to be 20) goes to 5! It has worried me as the limit on the smallest package is pretty low. http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2007/05/05/virgin-media-introduce-speed-caps/

Oh and go figure thats a non recommended server, but one in texas instead, the recommended server only gave me 4 meg? Best to try several servers as its limited by the bandwidth going into a server as well.

FIOS has several tiers. That is the bottom one. Note the upload makes it completely worth it.

Something is going on with that server with the upload test.

Its extremely unlikely to havbe to identical tests with the exact same numbers for the upload. I've had Speedtest do that before though. I was getting 20+Mbps to Dallas one time. I'm rated for 8Mbps, and even with Speedboost, it wont hit that.

My home DSL via AT&T (SBC) - rated 364 - 1.5. Not great, but it's been stable for over three years . . . only changes by a few KBs. I am thinking of going with a cable type internet at some point - but for now I'm content.

Mine tend to go up and down very slightly. 1982 being my fastest down. 191 was my fastest up. It usually stays around the same level, even using different servers.

Only once was my performance low, I assume they were doing work on that day somewhere. I got 511down and 76up! But as it was for one day only, I didnt let it concern me.

As you can see, Im pretty much below the country and areas average speeds, but I get what I pay for and that includes businesses etc. And for the time being its plenty fast enough for me and what I do. In a few months I may go upto the medium or large package, but I see no need now.

Something I found out today and this may prove it. The Comcast installer, that transfered my service, told me that Comcast puts a cap on internet speed if you don't also subscribe to their TV service. I did have basic cable at one time , along with their High-Speed internet and my speeds were reaching over 10 mbs. Since having cable stopped my speed is right around 4.2 mbs. As you can see, my ISP average is over 8.7 mbs. I would think that Comcast controls that ISP. Most people here have both services. So, they have got you by the short ones.;) If you want really fast internet, you have to get their TV, too. rolleyes

Odd times the tests go funky and give results like that, Adryn got similar a while back, or Matts jacked himself into the backbone.

Yep, they are crooks. I have basic cable because they told me they cap you at 4 for standard tier, and 6 for premium without it.

Thanks for confirming that , Adry. I was thinking of dumping my sattelite TV provider and going with all cable but the cost ends up more for just Comcast, then it does with two different companies for TV and internet. I guess I can live with 4+ mbs, considering i was on dial up 9 months ago;)

    Here we go.

The last set I posted were 3 days apart. This set is 3 minutes apart.

Dual P-III 750 with 1G RAM running Arch Linux. Latency was 324ms
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/130610982.png

This is a P-4 2.0G with 1G RAM running WinXP Pro SP2. Latency was 252ms
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/130610148.png

This is very normal for my connection. I work on a lot of machines here and almost always test them before they leave. Linux machines are always much faster for downloads and uploads.

    Interesting.

I dont understand though. If your ISP has a limit, how can one OS go above that? Unless both systems (or one) is drastically underperforming?

Anyone got a good reason for that? ;)

That's my question too. It seems like maybe the ISP can't control it too well??? Is that the case? That's what it sounded like with someone who had Comcast (hate the freakin company, btw;) )

The differences seem to be huge! Without getting too technical, why is that?
