Upl/down speeds between windows, Unix, and Linux are negligable. If you have evidence supporting otherwise, I'd be interested in it. You can only go as fast as your ISP allows you, and your upload is off on the nix machine. What are you rated for? I mean, if your nix machine hiots what you are rated for--there is something odd going on in your Windows environment.

My OS X Linux, and Windows machines all test relatively the same. That, and these tests are sheerly for entertainment value. Even your browser can make a difference in the speedtest, which makes it somewhat inaccurate.

I don't know why my speeds vary so radically between Linux and Windows but it does it every time. I think the fastest download I have had on Linux is 13,360 and on windows it's never and I mean never exceeded 6,000.

I'm on a 6mb connection with Comcast, regular domestic connection. I only run these tests in Firefox and I always go to the same server which is in Dallas, TX. so I am always comparing apples to apples.

Like I said, I don't know why, I just know what it does.

Have you run a TCP/IP optimizer (or done the manual registry tweaks) on your Windows XP machine? I'm not sure if SP2 fixed it, but prior versions of XP were not set to use high bandwidth connections. Once you tweak the settings a bit, it should run much better. In particular, you need to adjust your TCP Window size, but I like to use a little program called TCP Optimizer http://www.majorgeeks.com/TCP_Optimizer_d2104.html

report back if that helps any, or if you've already used such a program or adjusted the settings manually. :)

Why would just useing linux allow you double what you say your isp should be capping you at? Something isn't right.

After overhead, thats about right. Cable providers are notorious for giving you a little (to a lot) extra bandwidth so as to make up for the overhead and user traffic. Not so with DSL, in my experience.

    Pretty consistent, to one city...

You saw my last result to a server in the same city as me. They are really just a toy and not entirely accurate, unless of course, you can find all your download servers in the city closest to you. Then they might mean something ;)

Yep...I tried it from different cities in my area and it was crazy different.

It is called overhead. You have the same thing happen while driving through town, and on the highway. Overhead is that area that ISPs put in effect to not allow oversaturation of the network to the point that no one would be able to use it.

Actually, overhead is usually in reference to TCP overhead, in where packet headers, etc actually lower the overall total bandwidth. If an ISP explicitly gives you 1.5d, not more, you will never hit that speed. Not 100 percent due to TCP overhead.

Some ISPs will actually give out more bandwidth than rated for, so that they can avoid their customers falling too far below what they are rated during peak times. Is that also referred to as overhead? Because it seems like a misleading term. Maybe I misunderstood.

I know in the case of Cable companies like Cox and Comcast, they give you a lot of extra bandwidth for free when the network isnt at peak.

Most of you here should understand that comparing speed to different servers around the world would have little diagnostic value. Run trace route and see how many hops your making to get to each server. That alone would tell you how inaccurate that kind of test would be. Also you have no way of knowing what the bandwidth usage is on the server your downloading from or on any of the servers your being routed through for that matter.

SpeedTest can give you a reasonably good idea of a connections capabilities as long as the comparisons are all to the same server and you use the same browser. I use this kind of testing frequently at customer sites and compare their speeds to my laptop on their connection. This helps me determine if they are experiencing issues with their ISP or if their having local network issues causing slowdowns.

My provider gives you nothing for free. You got the 2mbit package, its always around 1975-1985. You get 4mbit its always around the mark. You get the 20mbit its always round the mark. Companies here suck, wont give you nowt for free! :(
