Online Spellchecker, seem like a good idea. However, the dictionary database is huge, not to mention the bandwitdh, spellchecking hundreds a post a day, would consume. MG's would need more than one English language dictionary, since there are 3 distinct dialects of Modern English.

What's wrong with ieSpell, or any of the extensions for other browsers?

    Proof read, bifore posting :)

TBH and I'm guilty of overusing spellcheckers, is that being reliant on these makes one lazy in actually learning how to spell properly, which is why when I see handwritten application forms etc is that our youth cannot spell ( maybe the TXT generation ), sad really as they tend to be disguarded from the interview stage.

What three distinct dialects? There must be dozens, and then you would need to add all the foreign countries with their versions of English.

That's what I mainly use as it integrates quite nicely with vb software and it's free. Just click the icon in the upper right corner of the reply box and it brings up the spell checker or right click in the reply box and choose check spelling.

I purchased SpellCheckAnywhere several years ago and have found it works in everything I have tried it in. The versatility of it along with all the dictionary's that are available for the price is great!

Personally, I don't have a spelling issue...I've always excelled at spelling except for a couple words that plague me to this day where I transpose the letters. My main problem is poor typing skills and forgetting little things like commas.

ie spell doesnt work with firefox, and the new version doesnt have its own extention. i need a spell check and would love to see one for mg. although i understand the issues between english english, and american english i cant see why you would have to have both. if you just had american english (this is after all an american site) the few words that were spelt differently would cause no more confusion than the members own spelling of these words. just my two cents. :)

Actually, PHP here on this server is compiled with pspell support, but vBulletin is currently not supporting this feature.

They keep leaving the letter U out of words like humour, rumour, and lots of other words that escape me. I'm having a senior moment. :D Bazza

That's why I said, "or any of the extensions for other browsers".

There are plenty of spellcheckers for FireFox, SpellBound comes to mind, and Opera has one also.

  12. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Oxford English, which is proper english. Hardly spoken or used. Taught mainly in non-english speaking European countries as an additional language.
    American English
    British English

I'll throw a fourth in Australian English, the differences between Birtish and Aussie are minor and mainly slang.

Some dictionaries also have Canadian, which would be the same as American one would assume, and believe it or not, New Zealand English, Belize English, Carribean English, Hong Kong English, Indian English, Irish English, Jamaican English, Malaysian English etc etc.....

  14. Shadow_Puter_Dude

I would classify thoses as sub-dialects of British. Since most of those countries are former Birtish Colonies.

  15. Insomniac

Then America is also a former British colony.

There's also South African English, and that's not solely British.

  16. Shadow_Puter_Dude

I'll give you that, but American has strayed so far from the Queen's English, or should I say King's English ;); it has become it's own dialect.

  17. Insomniac

    Yeah, that's true.

There really isn't much of a difference between the others to warrant the seperate titles.

not since the newest two updates. i looked at everything i could and although there was a thread somewhere explaining how you could adapt one of the spellcheckers to firefox, it was very complicated and the results questionable.

I don't use FireFox, so I can't speak from experience, but I'd be surprised there isn't a spellchecker available?

:) however, this is a predominately american site, and those spelling inconsistancies will exist whether we have two types of spellchecks or one. as far as things like southafrican english goes, once again i think we are all thinking too much! maybe we could just have an american one to start with, and if it proves useful and popular perhaps some of the english mods could work on a british version?

    1. Oxford English is not a dialect, it's correct usage by definition, but there are also Estuarine English, Northern English, Liverpool English, Yorkshire English, Geordie English, Glasgow English and so on and on and on.

    2. American English is indeed a dialect, but you must remember that:-
    a. There are a lot of dialects in the US of A
    b. There is a lot more of America than US of A

    3. British English? Bite on the bullet, boyo. In England they speak English. full stop. (or period, in your version of their languiage)

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

You are correct, I should not have cited Oxford English as a dialect. I did. however. indicate that it is the proper form of English.

Amercian English refers specifically to the USofA and there aren't that many different dialects in this country anymore. You can chalk that up to a mobile society and Television.

The English don't even speak Oxford English. Oxford English is very rarely used or taught, with the exception of non-English speaking European countries, and those countries we collectively refer to as the Third-World.

I did learn Oxford English when I was younger, that was what was being taught at the time. Here in the USofA, American English is now the main stay. Why, because no one in this country uses Oxford English.

Don't call me a boyo. I am neither a boy or a young man. It is an insult to call a grown man a boy.

I have no issues with the spelling being in English UK or English USA, the missing "U" causes no major harm and I think by now we all know what differences are in various versions of English.

I don't think thats the problem tho that was the original OPs question but more so on tpying wrods worng, which I still feel a spellchecker ok fine but will not help you actually spell the words right, learn to spell without a spellchecker, spellcheckers are great for just making sure your text is fine, but in real life they not going to help much when you are not using a PC.

They dont also help much when the posted text is in GangstaTEXT, MobileTXT, L33tH4x0rTEXT formats, which we see alot of on forums these days.

Halo, thanks for putting this back on track. My very first comment was to the OP, the others, well...

I agree a spellchecker won't make you spell any better. I use them to catch any of the numerous transposition erros I make when typing. You've all probably seen of few of them; like, teh. Use a dictionary, if you don't know how to spell a word. I own two, a Webster's Dictionary and a Oxford English Dictionary. The Websters Dictionary is right next to my computer and gets used. So much, that I normally have to replace it every couple of years.

The main issue with spellcheckers and forums doesn't really have anything to do with scripting, be it php or java. The dictionary would need to be stored in a database on the server, which would increase the number of SQL queries, that have to be made. Thus impacting the performance of the forum and increasing bandwidth.

If you need spell checking there are numerous add-ons that will do it for you. If you can't find an add-on you like; you can always type your post in a word processor first. Spellcheck for errors, copy & paste when satisfied with the content of your post.

Agreed, I tend to follow the above and type any large posts/replies into MS Word or similar, for two reasons,

    1. to spellcheck, not that I always spellcheck a post so some typos will be evident.
    2. to not loose the post if the forum software or the internet goes funky, in the past I've loast loads of posts only to have to retype again until Abby suggested typing in notepad/word etc then if the the post is lost its easy to copy & paste in in again.

Real simple solution, use word or your word processing software to type replies, then copy paste to the reply window here :)

Edit whoops missed the few above posts :)

That's because you need to install both Aspell and the precompiled dictionary.

Aspell is pretty good (I use it in Opera), but it's a convoluted process.

Either try installing both, or use the workaround link for Spellbound.

Correct on both accounts! Canada still recognizes the monarchy. We have the queen on our coins:

AS you can see on our famous loonies and toonies, and she still appoints our govenor general.

Exactly, thankfully I always just used a dictionary when I didn't know how to spell something, even when I was IM'ing a friend. Now I never have trouble spelling anything unless I'm using one of them new smart people words.

I was over at a friend's house the other day, he was writing an e-mail, and he kept asking me how to spell stuff. He must of asked me five different times and they were all really easy words. I was like, "Wow."
