I just inventoried my WHOLE network using this new free tool I found called Spiceworks. It's fairly accurate - the only mistakes I'm noticing are due to pre-existing DNS errors.

    It tells you EVERYTHING!

It breaks IP devices down into categories:
    -Workstations
    -Servers
    -Printers
    -Networking

Lists all network information (hostname, IP, MAC, Manufacturer), all hardware, all installed software on computers (including version numbers), running services. And lets you cross reference everything.

    I think I'm in love.

This looks good, Mada....but does it work on W2K systems ....only mentions xp.....

Hmmm.... system requirements in the download section list XP SP2 and Server 2K3 as requirements... however, that's just for the install... you can then view the console from a browser on any machine.

You can't spy on people ALL DAY!!!

Seriously, I think you're just letting the users do the dirty work for you. Let them surf porn so you don't have to. :D

Well i downloaded it and tried it on a Win2k network. 2 off win2k pro pcs, invnetel router, brother MFC network printer. No XP or Server versions.

Website said min 700mhz processor + Win2003 server (wow what a combo must put them up for the Eurovision song) but it downloaded ok - six and a half megs.
It installed OK, and seems to run fine although it swallowed very hard at the firewall in the inventel router.

    Opinion.
A bit slow I was never quite sure when it had finished something.
Similar to the software that comes with the BT Business Routers.

It did find the Dell, Tosh and Brother MAC Ids and service codes. And the Windows versions.

    :cool

Spiceworks seems to co-exist happily with Norton.

I do get an error message on starting non administrator accounts however.

Well it started playing up in all win 2k accounts, couldn't find a .net dll (which I don't have) so I have uninstalled it.

Oh gawd, I haven't touched this thing since I made this thread, in favour of IBM Director.

I did install Spiceworks on a WinXP SP2 box originally, and had no errors, so we'll need to know more about your error, srsuloc. Can you post a screenshot?

I installed Spiceworks on a bunch of pcs as a standalone program...had trouble on the server and I remember several WMI errors.

    Does this answer your question?
