    Hay yall.

Just to start off I am not promoting spy cleaner gold (spycleaner Gold). I saw it on one of the popular download sites and though I would try it.

It seemed very informative. You could click on the spyware and it would give you information about it and tell you how to get rid of it if it could not.

It also has a built in hijack this type program that seemed to give a lot of information.

I just wanted to see what yall thought about it if you have seen it.

The download was a full version but only a 30 day trial so not free.

    Just asking

We prefer Ad-Aware, Spybot, SpySweeper or the new Microsoft Antispyware. 2 of those 3 are free.

Please do not reply to this if you have not tried it. I am just asking what yall think. It just seemed cool. Frankly you should keep an open mind when fighting spyware and telling me what you prefer is very obvious if you read the forum faq.

So what you do here is use the same programs and never keep an open mind to new things. Sounds like you should be good at this for like a couple more weeks. If everyone on this site has that attitude I shal post elseware this place is dead... Next

As I thought, a new poster, sort of makes one wonder if your trying to simply advertise a program you are affiliated with. Following the release of Microsoft Anti-Spyware I assume a lot of companies are afraid of how this will affect their revenues.

Otherwise, to not try another program for me makes you as narrow minded as you claim we are, so were at a draw, unless you want to try it.

    Let me know :)

Also, Spy Cleaner has been rejected here because it is on the Rogue spyware list for many reasons including Ad-Aware rip-off.

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products

    "aggressive, deceptive advertising (1, 2); false positives work as goad to purchase; "Free Spyware Scanner" uses out-of-date reference database w/ no update function; exploits name "Ad-aware" (1); Ad-aware rip-off (1, 2) [A: 6-26-04 / U: 11-6-04]"

Lets quit the pissing contest Im trying the Microsoft beta now. It seems to give similar information than the one I was tlking about. I do not work for or know anything about spycleaner. I am a sys admin at the houston chronicle and do this day in day out. I try new stuff one because it's my job and 2 because I get bord trying the same thing over and over. I could not or should not have posted it. I just thought it was refreshing to not have to see the crappy interface that adaware and spybot have to offer. Check it out and let me know thats all.

See now your giving me information I can use. I did not check to see if it was on the list. Thanks.

But... Spy Cleaner has the same Ad-Aware interface. We do try every program submitted, but we refer to the rogue program list because there are really only a few original spyware removal tools, the rest copy the others usually with poor definition file updates and by exploiting the words Ad-Aware and in some cases even actually installing spyware.

So, I hope you understand, we stick to a handful of time tested, proven programs rather then constantly suggest new ones. It is also easier to help people if they use programs we are familiar with.

Anyhow, let me know how you like the MS Beta, its the first spyware removal tool I have liked besides my favorites, Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpySweeper. I used to like Pest Patrol, but they have slid downhill lately.

Sorry to get into a pissing contest, your probably right there.

The gold version I got from download.com. They give it a great review and looks nothing like adaware. But lest get off that. I liked microsofts beta. It is informative as to what it is doing and gives you some good information on the infected files. Ill use it a a few machines today and give you a full report.

Goto download.com and check it out. It might be the same as you were talking. All I know is that I liked all the information it was giving me and adaware it did not seem.

Thanks again for the link to the beta..

Im really digging the BHO section as well. Its basically Giant Spyware with the name Microsoft on it. It also has a network of users tied in to report new spyware as it is discovered. Huge potential for the end user. Tickled pink that you like it. Im always afraid I suggest something and everyone hates it ;)

    Ya

I see alot of potential too. I will monitor the effectivness of the background processes that block spyware.

The one thing I did like about SpycleanerGold was the utilities section. It had a Highjack IE part that looked prommising gave a huge amount of information. Again I do not know if it the same as the one on the site you were speaking of. Funny thing it has the same logo as yahoo spyware, the built in spysweeper in yahoo toolbar. Well just an observation...

I am running both on the same computer to see if they catch the same thing.

OK I ran a full test on both Spycleaner Gold and Microsoft’s Antispyware. Here are the results...

    1. If you have not downloaded Microsofts antispyware do it now. Great program. When scanning has an area that tells you what it found. If you click on the make of the malaware it gives you a description, level of risk and definition. Very Very cool feature. if anything it gives the user something to so while scanning. The background scan seems adequate so far. the only problem I saw is that is you tell it to use the spynet stuff. It came up on the corporate radar as a port malaware scan. I am trying to get more info on this and the program our corp uses. It emails me IP addresses that detects possible sypware and the program set it off.

    2. Now I come to spycleaner Gold. Pritty much crap. give false positives. On all machines it say's they have coolwebsearch and a few others which it did not. I checked the Hijack log and nothing. The only thing I liked about it is the hijack this type program. It basically gives all the information in the registry in a hijack type format, which could come in handy if you want to access that type of information. But I suppose you could just use regedit...lol

Go get the Microsoft product. NOW...

Just a quick note! Microsoft’s Antispyware has false positive problems too. Fixing some of the false positives actually opens the door to some malware problems since they remove registry entries that were meant to block the problems. And in one case it even broke Microsoft's own built in Win XP SP2 firewall.

SpyCleaner (and Gold) has always been on the Rogue/Suspect spyware removal tools list at:

Just a note to chaslang and Major Attitude... Why would download.com push spycleaner gold, even when it is know to be a bad product?

This all started when I found a newish download and download.com they gave it rave reviews. This could be a lesson for all. Some of the more popular download sites are raving about bad products.

    That's too bad...

    Thanks for everything. Signing off

I'm sure MA will have something to say about this. But my personal experience is that a lot of crap is available at download.com and they do not do a good job in screening and rating what they post. Again that's my personal opionion.

    Hi,
Im afraid I dont want to comment to far, but to speculate, often they get in positions of making great money by publicizing a product. I know this, because a small site like our has been offered money to publicize products, run popup (or just sleazy) ads and sell your emails all for EXCELLENT money. Again, I only speculate because perhaps the product was launched to look good, waited for reviews, then modified. There are a ton of possibilities. Ill admit Download.com has some crappy programs up there, but they do make an attempt to point out spyware items, etc., in many cases, just not all.
