Having used previous SPYBOT versions for 6 yrs, their lastest consumes 26 mg's as opposed to their 6.5 mg file. When I downloaded thier updates, alot including Tea Timer & lots of extra malware detection features. However, this time the process removed my hooks to real vnc remote & caused other registry problems on 2 of my computers that are always clean. So...now I'm reluctant to re-install any SpyBot until thier gliches are cleaned up. Question....how does Windows Bit Defender compare in quality to Spybot?

    Hi m79,

There is Windows Defender and there is BitDefender which are two different things. Windows Defender is a free program offered by Microsoft to Windows users. It can consume some resources and is updated as part of the automatic updates. You can read more about it here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about/overview.mspx

BitDefender offers a free online scan which is excellent. If you tell it to fix what it finds, it will. It scans archived data like WinRAR and Email attachments in addition to all your other files. Additionally it is available as a resident antivirus program for purchase. I can recommend it.

The size of a download file or the program's executable file have nothing to do with how much memory a program will consume when it is run. Memory usage will depend on many things including the features in the program and the new version has more features. However the new version only uses from 1 to 5 Mb more memory after just loading the program.

Spybot does not fix anything on its own. It asks you what to fix at the end. Why did you choose to fix VNC when you know you installed it. Many scanners will detect and remove VNC by default due to the nature of what VNC could be used for. As far as registry keys, you would have to be alot more specific and give us exactly what you are referring to.

There may not be anything to cleanup. And you can tell it with in the program's Setttings/Ignore Products to ignore VNC if you wish. You can even easily set Spybot to ignore various things by right clicking on them in the scan window and chosing Exclude this product from further searches. They gave you the choice, you just needed to chose it.

I will assume you meant Windows Defender as Abri already explained. The only way you could compare Windows Defender and Spybot would be if your used Spybot's Teatimer feature to provide active protection. You may find that Windows Defender is a larger resource hog. Also Windows Defender for XP is not very good overall.
