I'm working through the malware removal guide process. When I search for updates on Spybot, I get the following message:

Error retrieving update info file. Cannot allocate socket.

What do I need to do?

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Sounds like you are behind a ProxyServer. You have to configure the Spybot to use your ProxyServer.

    1. Click "Mode", selecting "Advanced Mode".

    2. Click "Settings" in the left pane.

    3. Click "Settings" in the right pane.

    4. Under "Automation" - "Web Update", check "Use proxy to connect to update server".

    5. A "Proxy settings" dialog will appear, prompting you for the proxy server host and port. If the proxy server needs authentication, you can enter the proxy server user name and password.

    6. Click "Ok" to close the dialog box.

Okay. I got through the search process, but was unable to download the updates. Downloading/installing updates is a prerequisite to running Spybot, so should I just skip that step?

Why not? What happens? Did you configure the proxy server (if you are behind one)?

You can download and install the updates manually from here:

    Spybot Search and Destroy Update

I'm getting a different error message: Socket error #10061. Connection refused.

    Thanks!

I repeat the same statement about the proxy server. Are you behind a proxy server or not? That is a typical message that will be seen when the proxy is not configured.

Sorry for the confusion. No, I'm not behind a proxy server.

Okay so did you install the updates from the link I gave to you? If not, download the updates and run the program to install them. Then run a scan with Spybot and continue.

Either way, continue with the process even if you cannot run Spybot for some reason.

I'm still working on the malware removal process. Now I can't seem to get the panda scan to work. When I click Scan Now, a dialog box comes up, the loading starts, but gets stuck and I eventually get a "page cannot be displayed" message.

Shall I skip the panda scan?

Did you uninstall ALL old Sun Java versions and install the current version as requested in the beginning of step 6?

    Did BitDefender work okay?

Skip Panda if still having a problem.

Yes to I've got a current version of Sun Java onboard.
    BitDefender worked fine.
I'll try Panda once more, before skipping on to the next step.
    Thanks.

It's version 6, and all old versions have been uninstalled.

Hae you completed the READ & RUN ME yet?

Are you still having malware problems? If so, attach the 6 logs requested in the READ & RUN ME.

Here are my first three attachments: hijackthis log, newfiles, and AVG. I was not able to run Counterspy or Panda Scan.

    Thanks,

    Your logs are clean!

What is the purpose of your thread? Were you having malware problems?

Yes. I thought it was malware. I've been having problems booting up and shutting down, and very slow online performance. I solved the boot up problem last week, but certain online functions are still not working well. Any ideas?

    Thank you.

Nothing that is related to malware. And those topics don't really belong in this forum. I will give you a couple things to fix with HijackThis that may help a little. But some of your problems may be due to Symantec.

The items listed below are not malware. You just don't need them to load at startup and they waste system resources and slow your system down.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DMXLauncher] C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~3\mimboot.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] "C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Did that help at all? If not or it did not help enough, look into uninstalling Symantec and using something less resource hungry.

Thank you for your help. I tried the hijack this fix, but I'm still having problems. It must be Symantec. I'll look into an alernative.

Everything you need is in the below procedure which you should follow anyway. Before installing a new antivirus, make sure Symantec is uninstalled. Typically Symantec is as difficult to remove as malware. Check your HJT log and newfiles.txt log (at the end in the uninstall list) after uninstalling Symantec and make sure no signs of Symantec or Norton exist. If they do, it will still be wasting system resoureces on you and it could cause problems for a new antivirus program.

How to Protect yourself from malware!

I suggest you give AVG Free a try.
