spybot questiontem?

ok.. so my hubby has somehow messed up his computer.. I have started with the read and run first thread... working thru it.. i downloaded and installed (was previously on the computer..but thougth i would get rid of it and just start with a new version)spybot.. started the scan and now it is just sitting still.. the status bar says .. "running bot-check [7207/109775: CoolWWWSearch.Aboutblank]"

how long does it usually take to get past that particular item? should i stop the scan and restart it or???????

its been running for 40 minutes on the same thing.. so i stopped the scan.. everytime i try to run spybot it hangs in the same spot.. it was doing the same thing with the older version of spybot.. which is one of the reasons i started thru the read and run me first thread...

any suggestions on how to get spybot to finish?

Hi srmjdm!

Some of the applications can be blocked by antivirus and antispyware programs. Where you're not doing an online scan, it's possible to turn your computer off, disconnect it from the internet and then reboot without an internet connection. Load those programs you need first, like CCleaner, AVG Antispyware and the MGTools and see if you can get them to run this way. Then be sure to enable your antivirus-antispyware software before you reconnect to the internet. If one thing doesn't work, proceed to the next.

ok.. so i thought maybe it was a problem with spybot.. so i uninstalled version 1.5 (1.5 took a long time to start up and also made my computer make a whirring noise when it started.. thats not normal is it??) and installed 1.4... started the scan.. still hangs up at coolWWWsearchAboutBlank.... cpu usage is at 51%

running winXP home edition sp2
pentium 4 cpu 2.60ghz
256 mb ram
avg antivirus

can i just skip this step in the read and run me thread.. or should i try and run spybot in safe mode??

nevermind.. finally let it sit long enough and it went on .. still waiting for the scan to finish... thanks to all who helped

Spybot 1.5 causes your computer to make a whiney noise and it's very slow to load. That's true.

It shouldn't take that long though for the whole thing to run, maybe 15 minutes or so.
