when trying to shred the temp files through secure shredder the program always freezes. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it still was not fixed, any ideas

How long did you wait before shutting down? It is an extremely slow tool.
If you have alot of files to shred it will seem like it is not working. The default shred it set to 5 times on that tool. Try changing it to 2 or 3.

well, just a few minutes. i would then bring up the task manager and it would show that spybot was not responding.

If you try to shut it down with the Task manager it might say it is not responding because it was trying to shred the files while you tried to shut it down.

Give it a few minutes more.

Better still use a free program called Eraser. Its fast and very effective.

Whilst you should probably try to figure out what is causing the problem, I agree with robert. Eraser is a very good secure erasing tool and I use it ocasionally (its not that often I need to securly erase files beyond the DoD standard) but when I do need to make sure somethings gone eraser does the job great (clients can be very funny about replacing hard drives even when theres nothing important on them, sometimes its easier to just agree and secure erase it).

it can be found here on MGs

i've had eraser, but like i said i would also like to know what was going on with spybot as well. the number of temp files was only 15-20

Try just cleaning the cookies. When you get into temp files it can be tricky. What OS are you running? What are your security settings? The contents of some folders are seen as part of windows and Spybot might have trouble accesing them. The IE5 folder for instance. Do you have spybot set on advanced settings or default?

it cleans just the cookies no prob. my os is xp pro and spybot is set on advanced settings, but i'm not sure about security settings?

If it shreds the cookies it sounds like it is working correctly. When you say 15-20 files, what size are they?

I have felt like the shredder doesn't respond myself, but like I said, it is slow. Just hang in and let it run.

If it still wont shred then the files might be hidden or protected. I dont see why they would be unless it is something you might have set up. Have you made any of your folders password protected?
