I was reading the malware prevention guide and it recommends not to use the Teatimer feature of Spybot.

I find it very useful indeed, it has stopped many malicious attempts to change my registry. Also, when installing software, it allows me to choose wether the program will run on start up. I usually decline any attempt for running on start up as i prefer my computer to just run the security software and not waste time starting superfluous programs.

So is the Teatimer really necessary ?

I'm sure there are some of you who will know more about it than me so i welcome any comments or suggestions.

    Thanks.

While Teatimer can be useful, it can make it difficult to impossible to remove various components of malware. Thus we suggest that it not be used while running the cleaning procedure. In addition, Teatimer has been known to be a resource hog and thus has never been high on our recommended list. If you have no full time antispyware blocking tool, then running Teatimer is better then having nothing.

With WinXP SP2 and Win2K SP4 users can use the free Windows Defender as a alternative for a blocker. My personal preference is Spy Sweeper which is not free but it is excellent. Thus I use Spybot's SDhelper and Immunize features and obviously I can use it as an additional backup scanner, but I do not use Teatimer since I have Spy Sweeper (and on some PCs I replaced Spy Sweeper with Windows Defender).

Actually it is pretty good. It just does not waste time looking for trivial items like many other tools do (for example: cookies and MRUs).
