I am having trouble following instructions in Line 6. "If you put it in Tools type CD\Tools". Where do you type in this?

My drive is "F". I am trying to get rid of a folder in ProgramFiles called "Spybot - Search & Destroy". I downloaded/unzipped ForceDel to a folder on Desktop called "Tools". I can access CMD, but if I type in "ForceDel f:\ProgramFiles\Spybot - Search & Destroy", I get a message that says, in effect, "bad command". I am missing something, but I don't know what. Your help would be most appreciated. Please reply to:irvberman@verizon.net.

P.S. My OS is Win XP Home.

Re: Can't delete corrupt and unreadable file

Have you tried to reinstall it again? (Spybot, that is).

You DID download the program on that page "forcedelete"?

When you do forcedelete under command line, that is NOT a valid DOS command.
FORCEDELETE looks to be a download that will work on the command line AFTER downloading.

I am afraid I don't understand your reply - about using ForceDelete AFTER downloading. If you have the time could you write out step-by step instructions starting with what to do when you have downloaded ForceDelete to a folder on Desktop called Tools. Or maybe even that is wrong??? Basically, how do you tie in ForceDelete with the file you are trying to delete. In my case it is F:programFiles\SpyBot - Search & Destroy\messages.zres.

    Appreciate your interest.

When you do things from the command line, spelling and capitalization count.
Is the drive f or is it F? Yup, it makes a difference. If you do not type it exactly as it appears, you will keep getting bad command.

I suspect you should be typing something like
    F:\ProgramFiles\Spybot - Search&Destroy\messages.zres
NOTE: I don't have the program installed so I have no way of knowing if there is a dash in the name, if the & sign is used and where spaces should occur.
In short, the path you type in the command line must match exactly the actual path of the item to be deleted.

    To Ralph, Tim and Plodr:

I want to thank you all for your help and interest. The strange thing is that all the error messages, etc that I have been getting have, for some reason, disappeared. All is well, except that it is taking a year and day to boot up to where I can get on the Internet. I am going to try a "clean-up". Thanks, again

If you think your computer is loading and/or running very slow, that could be due to two reasons: the hard drive is dying or you have too many things loading at startup.

You might want to start a new thread on "what can I do to speed up my computer's boot time".
    Download Startup Control Panel http://www.majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html
    screenshots
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
then post what you see in the 4 tabs:
    Startup(user), Startup(common), HKLM /Run and HKCU /Run
so we can figure out if these might be slowing you down.

You might also want to look over ALL your security programs. It could be that something is set to scan at startup. That will slow the boot to a full desktop down a lot.

Again, thanks for your time and interest. You brought up an interesting point that, perhaps, you can clear up for me. I have 2 of antivirus programs and 1 firewall, all of which are on my StartUp list. Now, if I take them off the Startup list (I know about "msconfig") what actually happens to them (when do they begin to operate?). Likewise, a bunch of programs show up when I push "Start" and "Programs". What will happen if I delete some of those? Will they stop operating? As you probably can tell, I know something, but not enough.

Do not take anything off the startup list through msconfig.

Ahha!, If you have two antivirus programs loading at startup, that's the reason for the slowdown. You should only have one firewall and one active antivirus.

If I were you, I'd uninstall, using add/remove program to uninstall one of them. I think you will notice an immediate speedup.

Don't "delete" a program. The safe way to do it is to open the program and look through all the settings. If it has something like check for updates, select NO.

Again, if you want help trying to figure out what to stop from loading when the computer starts up, get the program I mentioned in post #7.

Plodr: As per your advice, I removed one anti-virus program and the boot up time improved dramatically.

Now I have another problem - loss of sound. Checked all the usual things that are to be checked and nothing appears out of line: speakers OK, Device Mgr indicators OK, volume OK, mute OK, Restore unfortunately didn't work, but I can live with that. I am not too sure about any sound drivers - it may be that Windows Media Player is screwing up by conflictiing with another program (that is the message I get when I try to use it) I did a Google search, but to date it was not helpful.

Can't seem to locate any info on my sound card. Could you tell me how to go about finding, maybe fixing it. I can go into the computer and remove it, boot up and reinstall it, but is there another method.

Again as before, any help your or the other guys can give me would be most appreciated. I hate being deaf!

marierossm, welcome to MajorGeeks. Please start a new thread with your problem. Attaching your problem to a thread started by someone else is considered hijacking and your post will be ignored in this thread.

irvberman, when you go into control panel and click on Sounds and multimedia and select something with a sound and press the play button, can you hear it? If you can, then we know that the windows sounds are working.
If you put a CD in and play it, can you hear the sounds? If not, please post the exact error message.

To see information about your sound card, right click My Computer, select properties the Hardware, the Device Manager. If your sound card is working properly, (it is listed under sound, video and game controllers, I think) there will be nothing in front of it. If something is wrong you will see a yellow ! or a red x. If you see something marked unknown device(s) with a yellow !, please let us know. Sometimes when drivers aren't loaded, you see that.

Plodr: I fixed my sound problem. You, and others, may be interested in the solution. First, all check points showed up as operating. Device Mgr, Volume, speakers, cable connection, the whole nine yards. When I was able to locate the sound card, it showed OK, but I decided to reinstall it using the XP Install disc. Long story short, the installation said it needed a file, which I located via a Google search. Got the file, allowed the install disc access to it.The installation then proceeded almost without fault and I now have sound again. I am getting good at this stuff. Still am unhappy with boot-up speed. Thanks and regards.

Plodr: Let me ask you another question? Do you have any experience with cloning and/or having 2 hard drives on 1 computer? I am trying to clone my 20gb onto an 80gd and keep both operating(read: bootable) using BIOS to decide which disk to boot first. For some reason, I keep having problems with the "target" disc that I would like to discuss with you - if you have done this kind of stuff.

Of course, anyone else's help would be appreciated. This is not critical, by annoying

I've never cloned a hard drive. I've done lots of imaging.
I do have two hard drives in two computers (one hd holds different windows OSes and the other hard drive holds a linux distro).
The program I'd recommend that does cloning and imaging is Acronis True Image 2009.
I believe they might have a trial so you could download it and see if you can use it to do what you want.

Here is the problem. When I use the "target" disc, I keep having trouble with my browsers and email crashing. The thing is sometimes Firefox crashes and IE and Thunderbird are OK, sometimes all 3 become inoperative. It is all very erratic and there doesn't seem to be any pattern other than the problem is with the 80gb disc. If I reboot, sometimes it is OK, sometimes all that happens is that the browser appears for a second and then the computer reverts back to the desktop. I checked internet connections via IPCONFIG and both discs show exactly the same info. Would you have any ideas where the problem might be? The problem is not critical since it is intermittent and I do have the 20gb as fallback. Oh yeah, I did do a Google search but couldn't find any help there. You know if there is a problem with keeping 2 bootable operating discs active at the same time on one computer.

As always, any help/advice/suggestions would be most appreciated.

If you clone to a target hd then you remove the original, set the target as master and boot with it.

Yes. It isn't possible only one partition ca be active at a time. You install a bootloader and chose what you want to run. This makes whatever you choose the active partition.

Plodr: For reasons unknown, my system, read 80gb disc, seems to have stabilized itself. No more error messages and the Firefox crashes have all but stopped. What is even better, the bootup time from start to finish (actually getting on the internet) has changed from 3-4 minutes to 30-45 seconds. Fantastic! All is as I would want it to be - for now!

I again thank you and the others for the time and interest you have all shown in helping me with my trials and tribulations. If I can return the favor, let me know.
