SpySheriff hacked my desktop

Hi. Without me even installing it, SpySheriff changed my desktop background to a garish blue screen saying that operation has been halted. It also disabled the buttons to change the desktop. Strangely enough, as the computer shuts down, my original desktop background appears for a second or so.

I deleted the SpySheriff files and followed the instructions in the spyware and virus removal FAQ. The garish background is gone but now there is only a plain background and I can change its colour using the button in display properties>desktop. Changing the background buttons are still disabled.

I've read the other posts and downloaded HijackThis but would like some advice about what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I followed all the steps and all of it worked except Trend Micro's online scan with Java which did not manage to remove some trojan files. TROJ_MUDROP.I and TROJ_AGENT.AAE

I've attached the log file from HijackThis. Thanks

ivelbob do you have 2 antivirus programs running (Mcafee & Avast) ? you only want to run one antivirus program at a time so you should choose one or the other (they can create conflicts with eachother)...

MiDGet is correct. You should only have one AV program installed.

Spybot has a bug that causes it to ignore a few baddies, one of which is newdot.net.

    Fixing SpyBot's Ignore Products Bug:
I want you to run SpyBot and get into the Advanced mode by selecting Mode and then
Advanced mode. Then select Settings and the in the left column select Ignore Products.
In the right window pane make sure the All products tab is selected. Then in that
window, right click your mouse and choose "Deselect all". Now in the left pane click
at the top on SpyBot S&D and then choose Search for Updates. Download any updates
required. Now click Check for Problems. Fix any that are found.

What version of DAP are you using? Older versions contained malware.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = http://localhost;
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F75F4D3C-DAD0-D353-D91E-8C1D8A1240C2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kgpdesdr.dll (file missing)
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet6_38.dll' missing
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
c:\program files\newdotnet <--- the whole folder if found

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

No! DAP = Download Accelerator Plus

These are the lines in your HJT log.
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie.htm
    O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie2.htm

Do you trust this Daily Weather Forecast program? There have been many items like this (one was WeatherBug) that contain malware.

    Fixing Locked Desktop
Also you should right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Then click the Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixdt.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixdt.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Please start you own thread. And how do you know spyware is gone? (Do not answer that here?) You should run the steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky.

chaslang, this just isn't my week. Before I could get round to the latest batch of fixes you suggested, new spyware (psguard) got past the new firewall (sygate). psguard also replaces the desktop screen too and disables all tabs under display properties except screen saver and settings. Thankfully I am spared the horror of another garish blue background because the spysherrif background problem apparently takes precedence. Lucky me.

Am trolling through various message boards now looking for solutions to the psguard problem. I'd be grateful for any help.

You must not use more than one firewall! Uninstall all but one. It's your choice which one. Sygate has a free version and Kerio does not. Also make sure the WinXP SP2 firewall is disable. It does not provide sufficient protection anyway so you cannot just use it.

Look in Add/Remove programs for PSGuard. If found, uninstall it.

Where did you get this from? Have you been downloading from other sites and where have you been surfing?

Haven't visited any shady websites. Unsure where it came from. Got rid of psguard as soon as it appeared. Still wrangling with the problem of getting my display properties tabs back.

Your last HJT log still showed PSGuard.

Have you uninstalled one of the firewalls and made sure the SP2 firewall is disabled?

Did you do the stuff I gave in message # 8? Do it again if you already did?

I got rid of the extra firewalls and did everything in #8 except for the display tabs because psguard removed all the display properties tabs except settings and screen saver. bg is now a blue screen.

Thanks for your help so far chaslang! I really appreciate it.

    Try this registry patch!

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixadt.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixadt.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.
