On a regular basis, if I run...
    1. AntiVir
    2. Norton Firewall
    1. Ad Aware SE Personal
    2. Spy Doctor

Would these programs be reasonably sufficient to keep an eye on my PC?

By running Spy Doctor and Ad Aware. Would scanning with Spybot - Search & Destroy be not totally necessary on top of those?

Ad Aware also has a paid package for home users. What are the differences to the freeware? Is it worth the money or will the freeware version be sufficient?

I have some time left on a subscription to Norton AntiVirus definitions. Which is a more complete protection between Norton and AntiVir?

Those are reasonable but I would still install Spybot & use the SDhelper and Immunize features. Do not use Spybot's Teatimer! Then whenever you like you can also scan with Spybot. Using it like this requires very little resources except when scanning.

I would also use SpywareBlaster with all protection enabled. This uses no resources.

I assume you mean Spyware Doctor and not Spy Doctor which is a rogue tool. If you have Spy Doctor get rid of it.

If you have a paid version of Spyware Doctor, you do not need to buy Ad-Aware SE because you already have a full time blocking tool in Spyware Doctor.

You should only have one antivirus application installed. So if you have AntiVir and Norton, uninstall one. Note: we do not recommend Norton/Symantec AV.

You should read this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

I've read this a few times. What does it do?

    Sorry, that's what I meant.

Is this because the definition updates are not frequent enough?

Nothing unless it is running. If it is running, disable it from Spybot's Advance Menu.

But you did not say if it is the paid version!

No! Because it is a massive resource hog and does not work that well at removing malware. And it can be very difficult to uninstall (sort of like malware is).

It is only the unpaid version. Worth upgrading to the paid version?

If you are willing to buy something, I would buy Spy Sweeper

Either way, you need a full real time blocking tool like this.

Does running these three programs together (Zonealarm, AntiVir PE and Spyware Doctor) use less PC resources then running Norton Internet Security 2004 and Norton AntiVirus 2000?

Yes! But you do not have a paid version of SpywareDoctor so it is really not going to help you too much. Also that version if Norton is way out of date and is no longer sold. They are on NIS 2006.
