spyware blaster question

I've downloaded the Spyware Blaster program recently. It says it block spyware but it does it w/o running in the background. Description states:

"SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background."

How does this thing work? confused

Spywareblaster is a preventitive, a blocker, and a restrictor. It works very much like the “Immunize” function in Spybot S&D. It does not have a scanner. It essentially installs a dummy file on your computer that fools web sites into thinking that its spyware has already been installed. So, in effect, it prevents the installation of spyware.

It adds known malware sites and sites that could harm your PC, into the blocked content list of your browser ( works for IE and Firefox ) this basically prevents you accidently going to or being re-directed to those sites in the listing, and their payloads being installed.

if you wish to view the list in IE, you goto Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > and click Sites and you will see a large list under Managed Sites.

In Firefox its Tools > Options > Privacy and then click Exceptions.

so all Spywareblaster does and why it does not need to run the the background is on updating is to add new known malware harming sites to this list as Lev said above. It does a good job in prevention and is well worth having.
