Spyware Doctor 2011 and free AVG 2011 conflict

I'm still running WinXP/SP3 on my home built system. I've used free AVG since Win98 days and the paid version of Spyware Doctor (without the anti-virus package) for the past three or four years.

I upgraded to AVG 2011 free about a month ago. Today I decided to upgrade from Spyware Doctor 2010 to the 2011 version (I have about six months or so still running on my last 1 year license from SD). After downloading the new/2011 version of SD I started the install and then saw a message saying that my AVG anti-virus software would conflict with the SD 2011 installation and that I should uninstall AVG before installing SD 2011.

As I don't have the optional anti-virus component as part of my SD license I'm puzzled. This conflict hasn't ever surfaced before when updating either SD or AVG.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I know there have been problems with the 2011 version of AVG (had some false positives myself from AVG's Identity Protection component the first few days I used the new version) but don't want to remove it unless it's absolutely necessary. Did a search on the supposed conflict (both internet search and an MG search) and can't seem to find anything about conflicts between AVG 2011 and SD 2011.

I like both programs and am reluctant to part with either, but if I have to I will. I suspect part of the problem may be that the line between viruses and other malware has always been a bit fuzzy and is becoming even more so as time goes along and new threats surface.

Suggestions?

If you use AVG for free, just get another Free version from AV, like Avira.
