Spyware Doctor, better than Ad-aware?

Discussion in 'Malware Help (A Specialist Will Reply)' started by Can't come up with any, Mar 6, 2005.

  1. Hi! folks,
I've been using Ad-aware SE Personal, Spybot and recently started using Spyware Blaster, without any complaints. Came across Spyware Doctor and figured I'd try it. First, I updated Ad-aware and Spybot and did an initial scan and got rid of the nasties, then used Spyware Doctor and to my surprise it found 64 other nasties. Now I'm wondering what gives. A bunch come from Wintective, some type of key logger. The hitch is, to get rid of them, I gota buy Spyware Doctor (Don't think so :D )

I'm gona go to Lavasoft and see if I don't find anything useful.

SpywareDoctor is not on my list of favorite tools to use!

To help us to best help you, please follow the steps below closely and in the order given and do not skip anything. If you have any difficulty, please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything along with details about any problems you may have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better. Don't be afraid to ask for additional help if you don't understand something!

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download
    HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following: your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message.(Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

  3. Hi guys,
    First off
    Well didn't find anything helpfull.
However I did all the steps from the Sticky: Read me first, and all tests found nothing :)
Now a week later, I figured I'll run Hijackthis free.exe and wow, I almost fell of my chaire.
What I don't get is how come ALL the other scanners didn't pic up on this (spyware doctor did.)

    Second.
How do I get rid of all these?

I clicked on the links for each individual trojan, but the fix has to do with messing around with registry, witch I'd rater not. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I downloaded Spy Sweeper and it got rid of 1 (Brilliant Digital).

    Running 98
    Avast
    Ad-aware
    Spybot
    Spyware Blaster (recently)

This is my list of usual programes, this is not includid on the others I downloaded in the Sticky list.

Please complete the steps I gave you in my previous message.

And what is it that you wanted us to see in the image you loaded? Just tell us what your problem is.

    You said
    What are "these"?

Also some programs detect BitDefender as Brilliant Digital. This is what we call a false positive. So I would have to have seen what file name or registry entries were being detected to know whether it was really Brilliant Digital

  5. Sorry about that chaslang, I think I jumped the gun. I ran a2hijackfree.exe when I should have ran HijackThis 1.99.1
    Here is the log file.

You should uninstall Spyware Doctor since it is not going to fix anything for you anyway. It is not doing anything but wasting resources. There are other programs that you could install that will block, detect, and clean that are free. You don't need it.

Why did you put HJT in such a directory name like this? Did you make a typing mistake? And why drive D: ? Isn't your normal \Program Files folder on drive C:
    D:\ C_\PROGRAM FILES\HJT\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = Liens

The below line is not a problem but should not be necessary:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mdac_runonce] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Do you know what this next line is for? If not, fix it too.
O11 - Options group: [Accessibilité] Accessibilité

    O16 - DPF: {0246ECA8-996F-11D1-BE2F-00A0C9037DFE} (TDServer Control) - http://www.club-internet.fr/EHMEL/JS/tdserver.cab
    O16 - DPF: {4620BC29-8B8E-4F4E-9D92-1DB6633D6793} (SurferNETWORK Plugin) - http://64.89.104.83/surferplugin.ocx
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/14241bf3c53415a9f221/netzip/RdxIE601_fr.cab

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

  7. Hi chaslang,

The reason I keep Spyware doctore (I don't let it run) is because it's the only prog. that's detecting Wintective and gator on my system (ad-aware and spybot and all the others including on-line scanners like norton aren't detecting anything harmfull, basicly giving me a clean bill of healt), so everytime I try another free spyware, trojan remover I run SD to see if that did the trick.

The reason it's in D drive is because I put all programes I download off the internet (my hard drive is partitioned into 5 drives). Didn't see the reason to put it on C. However, I will re-install it on C drive if that makes any difference. :)

I have no idea what these are.

I believe this one permited me to listen to my local radio station on the net. But I uninstalled it a long time ago.

It is always safe to remove O16 lines they will just redownload as needed when you return to the site. I would however keep the below ones for the online scanners (so you will not have to redownload if you have another problem - unless they make updates):

I still think you should dump Spyware Doctor. I bet SpySweeper and/or MS Antispyware will find the ones you are talking about and they will fix them too.

Why did you remove all the O16s?

You should still dump the Spyware Doctor stuff? As I said before, "I bet SpySweeper and/or MS Antispyware will find the ones you are talking about and they will fix them too."

  13. However, I did another scan and SD still finds 64 nasties
At this point I'm wondering if they're running a scam or what. I can't see any other possibility, Out of all the scans I've done with all the other programes, SD is the only one finding this stuff. Hard to believe.

    Attached Files:

  14. Figured I'd do some more cleannig.
Already tried Spy sweeper, and it only found one file (actually 2, but 1 was AIDA32).

    Can't use MS spy, I'm running 98

  15. Spyware Doctor is no more. :D

Yes I forgot you had Win98! Did you try the most recent version of SpySweeper?

I have found that SpywareDoctor does give false positives? Or that it detects things that are insignificant!

  17. Yup! With updated definitions as well.

I'm really thankfull for the time you've taken to help me chaslang. Thank you very much dude. :)
