I ran the Malware Removal procedure this week and eliminated the malware I had picked up, but my newly purchased Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus (which I purchased before finding your website) would not load.

After a week of trying to resolve the 2 error messages I get when double-clicking the Spyware Doctor icon while trying to initiate the program, I started a thread in the Software Forum to see if there was a fix. I discovered on PC Tools' website forum that my error messages have been an issue while using the program with Windows 7 64 bit, which I have. The PC Tools techs never indicated that had ever seen this, in fact an email from them last evening indicates they don't know what to do and they want to offer me some of their other products in place of the Spyware Doctor.

All that being said, DavidGP on the Software Forum suggested I run the Malware Removal procedure again and send the logs to you guys at the Malware Removal Forum for review, just in case there is something.

I am attaching the logs from running the complete Malware Removal procedure again. I will post another thread right away with snapshots of the 2 error messages I get while trying to load Spyware Doctor. Please let me know if you need further info.

Spyware Doctor not loading - more attachments

Attached are snapshots of the error messages I get while trying to load Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus. These are additional attachments to the logs I sent just a few minutes ago.

    Thanks

New info: The 2 snapshots didn't attach, evidently because they are already attached to my thread in the Software Forum, dated yesterday, 2/3/11.

I'm not sure that your problems with installing Spyware Doctor are due to malware, but let's finish cleaning up a few things and see what happens. Your message about a problem with wintrust.dll could indicate a problem with this Windows system file being corrupted or out of date.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
Now the below assumes that you have not reinstalled any of the PCTools software. Do not run the below if you have because it will break the PCTools installation if you have.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System File Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the help. Attached are the requested files.

After running your procedures, I reinstalled Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus, but it still has the same issue. I get the same 2 error messages.

That's what I expected as I did not think it was due to malware. Let's check it your wintrust.dll file exists.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1

    Download Mirror #2
    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      wintrust.*
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can just close this notepad window since the log is already saved on your Desktop. Be patient! It may look like it is not doing anything, but it takes awhile for this to scan thru your whole system look for matches.
    • Please attach the SystemLook.txt log found on your Desktop to next reply.

Here is the SystemLook.text file. After this afternoon, I will not be available to respond to your posts for a few days. When I am able, I'll respond again.

    Thanks again for the help.

Okay that shows the file as being present but it looks like it may be the wrong version for your x64 system. Or perhaps it is just unregistered. You should try running the Fixit program which may automatically correct this if that it is the problem.

Correct file size for x64 Win 7 is shown in the below as 220,672 bytes

I am back. I tried running the Fixit program for "Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically", which seemed like the appropriate one for my problem, however when I try running it, it says "This troubleshooter does not apply to this computer." I read through all 149 of the Fixit topics, and no other seems to apply.

I had Microsoft do a check of my computer for updates, and everything is current.

I have received a refund from PC Tools for the Spyware Doctor since they couldn't resolve the issue. In light of that, is this a mute point now or could it still cause issues with other programs?

I again read your recommendations post in "How to Protect yourself from Malware". If I'm reading everything correctly, you feel that the free anti-virus, malware, spyware, etc. protection in most cases is equal to the well-known purchased products. Is that a fair assessment?

Thanks again for all of your assistance.

Don't know for sure. Only time will tell. Perhaps when you update Windows in the future it will fix any remaining problems.

Not completely correct. What we are saying is the free tools are quite good and if you follow all tips properly and remember that security begins and ends with the user(s) of the PC then the free tools can be more than adequate. If however you wish to have the additional features and also support which are offered by paid versions then you should purchase paid protection.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I'm just finishing up the protection steps in "How to Protect yourself from Malware" and have a question about Item 5, AntiSpyWare Tools.

I installed Comodo Antivirus and Firewall in Items 2 and 3. For AntiSpyWare real time blocking, Comodo Antivirus + Firewall is listed as a free option. I have looked over the Comodo info and don't see it listed as having antispyware. Do I need to purchase the Pro version of Super Antispyware or use one of the other realtime products you list?

    Thanks,
    Terry

    Comodo's suite includes antispyware protection.
