I had a spyware infection on this computer. I went through the tools and it seems to be working fine, but I'd like to be sure. There is something that got installed that I wanted your opinion on: a-squared anti-malware. Is that stuff any good? This is going on a persons computer whos son put it on for them. The son also said that there was a hacker that had control of their computer (which I don't see.) I think it was just the spyware. Still, I'd like to hear your thoughts on that a-squared.

    Hi

    1) You are running 2 antivirus programs...you have both Avast and Verizon Internet Security Suite. Running two at the same time is not a good idea because they will be attempting to access system files and system processes simultaneously, casuing much inner conflict and both trying to fight for control.

Since Avast was only just installed I would remove it. Especially since it is not a full blown security suite and you may like all the other features of the security suite. If however you find your PC is running slowly, the security suite would be the first thing to remove.

A-squared is too prone to false positives and not nearly as useful as SuperAnti-Spyware or Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. Is your copy of Spyware Doctor a paid for version? If not. uninstall it.

    2) Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    3) Please go to Add & Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Viewpoint Media Player

    4) Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    5) Now Run Ccleaner!

    6) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

*Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now*

Here are the logs. And thanks for the advice. Odd, but now I can't find Spyware Doctor to uninstall it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
