Hello. I have a horrible spyware. I get a "windows security center looking" pop up in the lower right tray that says "your computer is infected...". When I try to run antispyware programs or hjt (ie: superantipyware, malwarebytes, avg or even a hjt) in safe mode or regular mode I get an error message when I try to run the programs I get a message that "a device attached to the system is not functioning". I am running windows xp (svc pk 2). I can not do a system restore and I have a new "guest" setting that I can not seem to disable. Is anyone familiar with this spyware. I think my luck may have run out, despite the fact that my system was already loaded with all of the antispyware software that I mentioned above. Please Please Please help me. :cry

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, as I suspected, I didn't get very far in the process. Because I can not launch any of the antispyware programs in regular mode. I was not successful. I did as much as I could in the "read and run first". And now I no longer have an internet connection (wireless or hardwired.) I did the basic maintenance, add remove steps, msconfig/normal startup; emptied the quarantined folder/trash; ran the cc cleaner; show hidden files, downloaded the antispywares but they won't run. Now when I try to reboot. It just stays on the hour glass. It seems like I can only do certain things in safe mode (except for launch the anti spyware programs). What should I do next? It only appears to be getting worse. Please help.

Download and try to run ComboFix first, if you can run this first it may allow you to be able run the others.

Try this and let me know what happens.

I actually tried Combofix already. The problem is that nothing launches when in regular mode. When in safe mode I get an error message that "A device attached to the system is not functioning" I also tried to run MGTools and I get an error message that"Failed to ensure dir exists:\MGtools".
I think the biggest hurdles in fixing it is that I can not launch any of the applications and I lost my internet connections.

Have you tried launching any of the scans in safe mode by using the task manager? Can you use explorer to find the C:\MGTools.exe and click on it? Same with the other scans --> SAS and MBAM?

Are you seeing anything in device manager that has a ! or ? or X next to it?

Can you do a system restore ....start / run / type "restore" without quotes?
