Spyware report

For anyone interested, I went through the applicable steps in the "Do not post until you have read this: How to: Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal".

The procedure succeeded in removing Gator and a few other things I wanted to get rid of.

For geeks, here are more details . . .

    1. Spybot found/flagged Spyhunter.
I did a Spyhunter scan yesterday (without first asking about it here) and Spyhunter claimed to have found all sorts of things including lots of Hotbar items. But as far as I can tell, none of the programs recommended in the "Do not post" thread flagged Hotbar, so I wonder if Hotbar was/is really present? Would the other programs on the list have found, flagged and/or removed Hotbar without me noticing?

I used add/remove programs to remove Spyhunter yesterday (upon advice here), but Spybot still found it after this.

    2. A question about AdAWare. I noticed that it quarantines items and then asks about removing them. If I click on "yes" to removing them, are they removed from the computer or still in quarantine? The programs lists a high number of quanantined items, but maybe this refers to items that were quarantined *and* removed?

    3. Here is what the various programs reported:
    - Spybot found Spyhunter and nothing else
    - CWShredder found 0 items
    - AdAWare found 5 items
    - Kill2Me searched for Look2Me
    - SpywareBlaster: I wasn't sure what to do with this (menus not designed for dummies), but I did run something and it reported that I'm Protected Against Checked Items (I left them all checked).
    - Norton Anti-Virus reported no viruses (whereas it had reported Gator and trickler.exe before running all the above programs).
    - Trend Micro Virus Scan reported "no malware alert"
    - McAfee Stinger didn't appear to give a report

    4. Concerning the part about removing MS Java, I looked in my programs and didn't see this particular Java prog. I did see Java2Run Envirnment and Java Web Start. Are these okay or should they be removed?

    5. I didn't use about.Buster or HSRemove (not applicable).

    Thanks!

    Laurie

    Welcome

After doing ALL of the TUTORIAL if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, INCLUDING YOUR WEB BROWSER, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder for example C:\Program Files\HJT
