    Welcome to MajorGeeks!:)

Please complete the following in order to get your computer into a known state.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

Look in Add/Remove programs for Spyware Slayer and uninstall if found!
You will have to shutdown Ad-Aware's Ad-watch feature while doing the below or it will probably block the fixes we need to make.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).
Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Spyware Slayer] C:\Program Files\Spyware Slayer\SpywareSlayer.Exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
C:\Program Files\Spyware Slayer <--- the whole folder if found

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

You must shut down your protection programs when trying to make fixes. They are more than likely blocking the fix.

Shutdown the below, the retry the fix:
    Ad-watch
    Ewido
    Windows Defender

What processes is using 100% of your CPU time?

And when do you get the application error for c:\windows\system32\mmc71cht.exe

Okay please do a few things:
    1. If you still have high CPU usage (if it comes back), tell me which process is using all the CPU time.
    2. Please give the complete word for word (exactly) error message that you get and state exactly what you did to get it.
    3. Locate the c:\Windows\system32\mmc71cht.exe file with Windows Explorer and right click on it. Select the Version tab (if there is one) and tell me who the Company is and what the Description of the file is. Also tell me the filesize and date.
Now run the steps in the below thread and attach the WinPfind log.

    Running WinPfind by OldTimer

Hi thanks again for helping me!!!!!
    The error reads:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:Windows\System32\MMC71CHT.EXE

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the applications support team for more information.

I have looked for this file with windows explorer but am unable to locate it i have also searched for it. I am attaching a copy of the search results in case they are of any use. The error is appearing as soon as the computer has started up and as soon as the Winpfind scan was completed. It seems to be appearing quite randomly, so it is hard to pinpoint.

Do you have viewing of hidden & system files enabled per the READ ME? If not, you may not be able to see the file if it is a hidden or system file.

Windows Search will not look for hidden or system files by default. You must configure it like below:

Searching for Hidden Files on WinXP

You did not attach any search results!
You also did not give me Version info on the file as requested.
You also did not attach the requested WinPfind log.

sorry i did not notice that the files were too large to be files attached. yes searching for hidden and subfolders was enabled. have since run the windows live scanner and it has found this file trying to access the internet, it did not know who the publisher was but it has blocked it with the firewall. I dont know if this has soved this problem.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop (yes overwrite the previous one). Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Windows Explorer and find the below and delete them:
C:\Program Files\Spyware Slayer <--- delete the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\MMC71CHT.EXE-02B30631.pf
    C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP

And tell me if the below file exists:
    C:Windows\System32\MMC71CHT.EXE

If so, try renaming it to MMC71CHT.XXX

Then reboot and tell me how things are working.

Let's get a Startup List with HijaakThis.

    Generating Startup Lists with HijackThis
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Put a check in the List also minor sections (full) check box.
    • Now click the Generate StartupList Log button.
    • This will create a file named startuplist.txt in the same folder that HijackThis is installed into.
    • Also a notepad file will open with this startuplist in it.
    • Attach the startuplist.txt file to your next message.
Let's get an installed programs list from HijackThis too!
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, to save it to a file where you can find it.
    • Attach the uninstall_list.txt file to your next message.

Sorry to say I cannot see anything in your logs that indicate any problems with malware. At this point I would suggest that you try asking a question about the MMC71CHT.EXE error in the Software Forum. But you need to more clearly define exactly when this occurs. In messages 15, 11, & 9 in this thread you said three different things:

    Message # 15:
    Message # 11:
    Message # 9:

You should also give the exact word for word and complete error message.
