Hi everyone I am new to MG. I was wondering about some stuff.I talked to different people that say that if i watch were I go I wont need a Anti-virus program or spyware remover.(I think they don't use them cuz it messes with there gaming)I am wondering how true that is.I also was wondering if there is any good free ones out there.I was checking out this Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta

    Thank You!!

Personally I think they have no computer knowledge what so ever if they think that. The only reason not to have AV software is if you dont have the internet and then it would be up to the user.

Personally I wouldnt turn on my computer with a AV program. If you get on the internet you MUST have a up-to-date Firewall, AntiVirus & Windows Updates. Without these you WILL have malware/virus problems.

For a list of free programs, see this site below!

Its a very good program for removal, as far as protection havnt tested that part but Im sure its good. Remember its still in BETA testing, before I would use it for spyware protection I would wait for the full release.

For the time being I would recommend SpyWare Guard & SpyWare Blaster for Spyware Protection. For AV I would recommend AVG AntiVirus, and firewall I would recommend ZoneAlarm.

The window firewall is not that good is it?

    NO

It does do an ok job at blocking incomming data but is missing a vital component and thats being able to block outgoing data, which can alert you to possible rogue applications/trojans/malware etc

I wonder what the programmers at MS where thinking that day when they decided to add a firewall with only half protection!!

so the advised firewall of ZoneAlarm ( free ) or Sygate ( free ) will do both.

as a side note, I do still use IE and have no problems with spyware..... alot has to do with protecting yourself and careful surfing habbits, dont be click happy with popups, and a major thing keep upto date with OS updates/patches/service packs etc

It's not giving you problems connecting to IE. It is given you problems allowing IE to connect to the Internet. You need to grant iexplore.exe access to the internet.

I'm not sure what you mean! Are you saying you can now access the internet with IE but IE runs slow? Or do you mean your online games run slow?

    both

Perhaps you need to run thru our cleaning procedures so we can determine if you are having malware issues.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
Also to get you started and to reduce the size of your HJT log. Do the following:

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and (make sure you follow these directions, you were running HJT from the ZIP file):

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Just finish all the remaining steps and provide feedback on all of them when you complete them.

Nothing at all? Not even cookies?

Well since you did not post a HijackThis log, I assume you are not having any problems.

No you do not delete IE. You will need it for some websites (especially Microsoft Update).

Yes Firefox 1.0.4 is the current version.

Well I don't see where to put the regular questions at. So... I was wondering if there is any safe place to download music from? I heard Ares. I would reather get MG's input.

Well the question does not belong in the Spyware Forum. A better place would be the Software Forum.

My comment. Is there is no guaranteed safe place. All P2P file sharing servers put you at risk. Some are worse than others. Some even include "malware/adware" in the programs. Ares is one of these bad ones unless you get the lite version.
