So I recently reinstalled WinXP as a part of my recreational activities during a relaxing vacation. As a part of the most basic part of the installation I went to MGs and downloaded the most recent installation files for my favourite non-malware apps and put them on a USB drive before I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled. Then I plugged in the drive and installed Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Super Anti-Spyware, and Avira Antivirus before I installed my network drivers and went online.

Next time I rebooted I went to update all the above apps, and noticed that SpywareBlaster showed protection disabled for one item, for Internet Explorer: Red Sheriff (2), imrworldwide.com, according to the list of objects that I spent the next half eternity going through. (DISCLAIMER: Do not be dumb enough to go to that url. Seriously. What are you thinking?)

I checked that box and manually enabled protection, then shut down SpywareBlaster again. Next reboot protection for the same item was disabled again! Now I'm nervous, since this has happened several times over. Am I just paranoid, or is this cause for real concern?

I've had the same thing happen several times, it only happens right after a SpyBot update though.

Spybot and Spyware blaster do the occasionally, there is usually threads at both support forums when it happens. Names are called, panties put into a bunch and then it get resolves with the next update. Best I can understand both parties think they are right and the other is wrong, but one is usually pointing toward a dead domain.

Now that you mention it, it does seem to happen only after updates... it hasn't happened the last few times I rebooted and I went in and looked for updates just to verify. If that's the case, then we're all good here. :)

    Thanks for clearing it up!
