Yesterday, I loaded SpywareBlaster into my Windows '98 system. After I enable "Internet Exployer Protection" and "Restricted Sites Protection", it will indicate "0 items have protection disabled". However, when I return a short while later, it will indicate that several items have had protection disabled in both categories. Can someone explain what is causing this and whether or not it is normal??

You may have something else disabling certain features. It could be okay or it could be malware. Which features are being disabled?

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Well, it seems that I've made a real mess here. In trying to obtain the HJT log, I must have deleted something. Any icon I try to open now on my windows '98 system, I get a message "windows cannot find iexplore.exe". I tried to restore to an older date, but the system keeps bringing me back to today's mess. When I boot up from restore, it also mentions cannot find javasup. I'd really appreciate some help.

Downloading, installing, and running a scan with HijackThis will not break anything or mess anything up. If you started using HijackThis to fix lines, you could mess things up.

Windows 98 does not have System Restore. What are you referring to?

When you boot up and tap F8, you go to command prompt (no.5). Here you enter scanreg/restore and you get several dates to restore to. That's what I did. Interestingly, in doing so, it appears that i got rid (fingers crossed) of all the coolsearch crap. However, I now have some other problems, some of which I got help on yesterday on the software site as I wasn't getting an answer here. What they resolved for me was the error message on boot up (smart guy, that Dude).
In any event, one of the items that arose today when I ran Registry Repair Pro, is that 3655 invalid paths came up (yes, that's 3655). I didn't delete any of these items as I'm still not sure what I have here systemwise with respect to malware. I have a couple of other problems but I wanted to do one at a time. The other items involve locating a couple of files that appear to be lost while the system says they are installed. Please advise if these items should be addressed here or on your other site.
As always, thanks for the help.

What you did was a registry restore which is not the same as the System Restore feature. When you did that you may have remove some of the malware items that you were having problems with but you also probably removed some applications from your registry that you wanted. That is why you still see traces of them on your PC.

Malware items can be addressed in this forum. Problems with software installations, registry backups/restores etc belong elsewhere.
