SpywareSherrif

    How do I remove SpywareSherrif?

It is definitely spyware, disguised as a crappy spyware scanner, but this thing has taken over. Any attempts to uninstall through it's own uninstaller appear to work, but upon reboot, there it is!

It has hijacked the desktop wallpaper, placing some stupid grammatically-challenged warning message, that basically is telling me that I'm being held hostage, and I need to buy something.

The program shows up in Add/Remove programs. In Program Files, there is a SpySherrif folder, containing only a file named SpySherrif.exe which gets recreated at reboot. The process must be running under a different name, because I see nothing to that effect in services.msc, msconfig or regedit.

I've followed the "Read Me First" steps, all except the on-line scans, since this particular PC can't access the net at the moment.

    XP home, SP1

    Thanks in advance,

    -Steve

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Download HijackThis 1.99.1

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifBefore running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifRun HijackThis and save your log file.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

    Download this file: SpSeHjfix109

Unzip it to your desktop or to a folder.

    Boot into Safe Mode

Start SpSeHjfix, click on " Desinfecton starten" (the other button means close) then it will reboot and finish the cleaning.

    Run SpSeHjfix one more time.

    Reboot in Normal mode.

Run HijackThis again and post a new log. Also post the log from SpSeHjfix, the log should be on your desktop or the same folder as SpSeHjfix.

    Thanks bj.

I ran the program in Safe Mode as per your instructions, and it seemd as though it really didn't do anything. It never rebooted. So, I closed it and ran it again. Let me know if I've done something wrong.

Here is the log, as well as a new HT log...

    Thanks again,

    -Steve

The first thing that jumps out at me is that your running AVG AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus. This is NOT recommended as they will cause conflicts on your computer. Pick ONE and uninstall the other!

Please boot into Safe Mode with the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\TEDDYK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/spage.html

Again, make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    NOW:
Navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff ←–– Delete this whole folder if it exist!

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msxct.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\win32.exe

    C:\winstall.exe

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner and Spybot S&D and have Spybot fix what it finds.
Note: Dont forget to update Spybot S&D by selecting "Search For Updates"

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

Reboot to Normal Windows , Scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.

    NEXT:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.)

Double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to merge, click YES!

After you complete this reboot, scan with HJT and attach the new log.
