SQL Server Service question

I'm tuning up my kids Win98 machine and trying to turn off unnecessary junk. We use this machine on a wired LAN at home. The network is just to share the internet connection and printers. A neighbor geeksquad hooked up my network.
In the system tray there is an icon which loads at start up that is for Microsoft SQL Server Service Manager v8.00.760. I have no idea what this is. I open it and all the boxes are blank for server, services etc.
Can I disable this and take it out of my start up programs?

    Thanks
    Jeff

It sounds as if someone installed sql (pronounced sequel) services, although I didn't even know it worked on 98. Sequel is a high powered data base but MS does make an add-on app for xp pro to use with it.

What about control panel > add/remove programs. Can you uninstall it there?

It sounds as if you know how to remove it from the start menu. That's worth a try.

How about Start > run > type in:

    msconfig

hit enter, go to the startup tab (I hope in 98) and uncheck it?

No, you sure don't need or want it.

I got this computer from a friend - maybe he put SQL on it. This old machine starts and runs slow enough without being choked by unnecessary stuff. Trying to keep from buying my kids a new computer yet just to play on and write up their Christmas wish list. (I know - I'm being cheap!)
There are two entries on the startup tab for SQL, maybe three:
    MSSQL$RETSDATA (runs sce.exe)
    Service Manager (runs sqlmangr.exe)
msdtc (a search told me that this is related to .NET 1.1 and SQL - I have .NET but not sure why or what that is)
I have the first two unchecked in Start tab and no problems yet.

    Any idea on this MSDTC?

    Yeah, stop it.

    1. How much ram do you have?

    2. Do you have the win 98 install cd and the cd key? Cd key sometimes on a green tag on the back or bottom of the computer.

Should I just uncheck it on the StartUp tab? That is all I have done with SQL also - I haven't uninstalled it.

I unchecked MSDTC and restarted. All seems well so far. I ran cCleaner, a freeware piece and cleaned up my registry and fixed lots of stuff. This thing is starting to hum now!
It has 192mb ram, AMD-K6 3D processor Win98 Se (I know, it's old) Actually this machine had less ram and a p133 processor when I first got it. Should have bought a new one when the HD crashed, but I rebuilt it ..... now it is my kids.
I also noticed another piece of software on it - another developer software I don't need. Microsoft Visual Studio. Know anything about it? Leftovers from the previous owner.

Well, it's best to uninstall as much as you can, but if there isn't that option then I'd stop those by unchecking them. I would go into control panel > install uninstall programs and get rid of everything I didn't need.

Visual studio is a program for programmers who write code called visual basic. You don't need that either. It probably was part of the sequel thing. Maybe someone was writing .asp web site stuff. (active server pages.)

Don't knock that machine. Those amd k6 machines are great, you have enough ram, and I'm still a big fan of win98 se as long as it doesn't need to be secured on a network (doesn't have really private files.)

I will say that with all that has been installed on your box, and as heavy duty as those programs are, I'd be up for wiping the drive and doing a clean install if it were me.

Have you ever done that on a machine?

I like ccleaner aka crap cleaner. You do have to find the right tab to check the registry, but I've never had it nuke a machine, which some "registry cleaners" are pretty good at.

I'll uninstall that stuff and use cCleaner to clean out the remnants. I used the registry "issues" scan and let it fix all. It found 291 things to 'fix'. WOW. Mostly from incomplete uninstalls.
Not a bad idea to start clean, but don't think I'm up for it right now.
Can you help any with getting a network printer working on this machine? It is a Brother MFC print/scan/fax/copy that is hooked into my router with a cat-5 cable. I can use all the functions from my WinXP tablet, but can't seem to figure out how to access it through the Win98. I have the driver installed and printer added but I don't know how to make it see the printer hooked to the router. Would the name of the port be the same as on my WinXP ie BRN_7A829D? I'm sure somewhere it should have a path like \\ROUTER\something but I don't know how to do this.

Maybe someone else can help here because I've never used a network printer from Win98, just a printer that is attached to another computer.

In Win98 you have to install the 98 printer drivers on the 98 machine itself in the latter case, so I would "think" you would surely need to do that here. It sounds like maybe you did that.

If you surf down through "My Network Places" can you see the printer?

If you can, when you use the Control Panel > Printers > Add new printer wizard, can you surf to the printer and select it to install?

You will have needed to be sure that the 98 machine and the printer have been rebooted after the router was fully up to be sure you're on the same subnet.

Do you have the manual that tells you how to log into the network printer to be sure it is set to receive IP automatically? If it is set to static, is it on your subnet (like maybe it is used and someone set it up for a different network?)

In any event, you should be able to log on and set it regardless of its IP. I'd set it to auto and then reboot everything (or renew IPs) and surf for it.

Again, I'm open to all ideas because I've not had occassion to use this setup. I'm just rambling about general network setups...

Of course there has to be a 98 driver available for that printer.

Drivers and the manual should be downloads at the Brother's web site. google.

Is the 98 box part of the network? Can the xp box and the 98 box see each other and share files? The 98 box has to have the network protocols, services and settings installed properly.

There is a network setup wizard in xp (control panel > network connections) that will update the 98 machine. You make the floppy and then use the xp install cd to update 98 for the network when necessary.

I wouldn't worry about ports at this point, that info isn't a standard software port.

Again, I'm just saying what I would try myself, not having used this printer setup myself with 98.

Well here's my quick answer. My 98 and XP machine can see each other and share files. I can print to the Epson printer on the 98 from my XP. For a while I could print to the Brother printer (that is hooked to my router) from the 98 machine, as a shared printer going thru my XP. But when I set that up, I screwed up my ability to use it from my XP (???). So I un-did that. That's not how it should need to work anyhow, since the printer is hooked to the router.
And finally, no, the 98 cannot see the printer in the Add New Printers wizard. And yes, I bought this new but someone else helped me set up the network the day I came home with my router and printer. I don't know much about static IPs and dynamic IPs.
