There have been numerous opinions about Ssds - good and bad.
Some say they are in their infancy and to avoid them - others have the exact opposite opinion.

Have they improved and would this one significantly improve my speed and efficiency?

    Thanks,

    Paul

IMO, SSDs have gotten better over the pat two years. The caveat is that given brands and models still vary widely in quality and reliability.

The fact that the Samsung has good user reviews is a plus. Contrast this to the OCZ drive my dad bought about a month ago for his netbook. After two hours of beating his head against a wall trying to install Windows, he finally contacted OCZ tech support who informed him a firmware upgrade was required in order for the drive to work. :confused:confused:confused

Whatever you choose, I'd backup your data religiously and keep the old drive loaded with Windows and your software just in case the SSD tanks.

    Thanks for your reply.
I always keep a backup from Acronis, so that's not a problem.

I just want to make sure the Ssd I get is reliable.

Intel, Crucial and Samsung have the best reputations, ensure you update the firmware before install, format it as a single partition (no 100MB Boot), try to keep the drive below 50-75% full for best long-term performance. Enjoy!

    Hi, Satrow,

I was just going to do a Recovery from my Acronis backup, which formats automatically.
    Not correct?
You also say to get update prior to install.
What is the purpose of that?
Am I safe in doing the update after install?

    Thanks,
    Paul

I'm pretty sure any recent version of Acronis will write the partition correctly (You don't want to use anything based on XP partitionioning).

If you update the blank drive, you don't have to worry about the warnings about potentially losing data, it's just a little easier on the head - most drives will be fine updated afterwards, but there's still a risk.

Personally I would take the installation of a new primary hard drive, of any type, as a chance to perform a fresh install of your operating system as part of the regular cycle of refreshes you should have established. The point of this is to get rid of the little niggles that develop over a period of months.

Personally, purchasing an SSD has transformed the speed of my computer. I used to have to wait for Firefox to load & exit, and for applications to load for a while. Now, the process appears instantaneous. SSDs have also advanced to a point where they now have a longer mean time between failure than most hard drives when purchased from a good brand (2 million hours for SSDs vs 1.5 million for hard drives).

    Hi,
What brand and model do you have?
Any thoughts on the one I am considering?

I will consider your suggestion as to updating before install, but how do I do that?
I have to put the OS on in order to download the update.

You can download the update using whatever computer you have now. There will be full instructions on the maker's site on how to update it - most likely via a USB stick during boot - so you can be prepared to do it (it may already be on the latest firmware, you won't know until it arrives) as soon as it's delivered.

I have Samsung 830's and Crucial M4 SSDs. A couple I have done fresh win 7 installs, most I've used Acronis to restore a backup to the SSD and haven't had any issues. With the Samsungs I have 2 64Gb, 2 128 Gb and a 256Gb. I have had zreo issues with them. The Samsung SSD Magician software is fantastic. It'll tweak your OS, update firmware.
I have a 2565Gb Crucial M4 in my laptop (got it for $169) and it has had no problems at all.

Your info is very much appreciated.
I asked someone else and they never bothered to respond.
    Thanks,
