SSL Certificate

I'm thinking this is the right place to ask this? What does it mean when a site doesn't have a valid SSL certificate.. :confused

For people who are stumbling across this,

An SSL certificate is a document that makes your connection to a website secure, via another server (a signing server). These certificates expire after a period of time, so an invalid certificate could mean one of three things.

1) Your computer date could be off - if your computer's date\time settings are incorrect, it could cause a problem with the connection (the computer will think it's expired)

2) The website owner hasn't renewed the certificate - the owner of the website let the certificate go past the expiration date

3) The website is using a self-signed certificate - meaning that the certificate was created on the website's server. The web browser has no way of confirming the legitimacy of the certificate, so it shows an error.

In the Pale Moon (Firefox for Windows only) and Opera browsers, when the address begins with https:\\, you can click
the icon at the Left end of the Address Bar to view specific information about the page security and Certificate Details.

In Internet Explorer (version 8), you can click the Padlock icon immediately to the right of the address bar for similar info.
